The Defense Legal Assistant provides essential administrative and clerical support to attorneys involved in criminal defense cases. This role includes managing case documentation, scheduling appointments, and assisting with various office tasks to ensure smooth and efficient case handling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administrative Support:
- Perform general office tasks such as answering phones, managing email correspondence, and greeting clients.
- Schedule and coordinate meetings, court dates, and depositions for attorneys and clients.
- Prepare and maintain case files, ensuring all documents are properly organized and filed.
- Documentation Management:
- Draft and proofread routine legal documents, correspondence, and reports as directed by attorneys.
- Prepare and file documents with courts and other legal entities, ensuring compliance with deadlines and procedural rules.
- Assist with the preparation of exhibits, discovery materials, and trial documents.
- Client Interaction:
- Communicate with clients to gather necessary information, provide case updates, and schedule meetings.
- Handle client inquiries and relay information to attorneys in a professional manner.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure sensitive information is managed appropriately.
- Case Coordination:
- Assist in the collection and organization of evidence, witness statements, and other case-related materials.
- Support attorneys in trial preparation, including assembling trial binders and preparing case summaries.
- Track case deadlines, court dates, and other important events.
- Office Management:
- Maintain office supplies and equipment, placing orders as needed.
- Ensure that office procedures and filing systems are efficiently managed and updated.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, or a related field is a plus.
- Experience:
- Previous experience as a legal assistant or in a similar administrative role, preferably in a criminal defense setting.
- Familiarity with legal terminology, court procedures, and office management.
