Scott+Scott is seeking a full-time, experienced senior-level paralegal to support attorneys at a fast-paced, team-oriented firm in its Austin, Texas office.
We are seeking a candidate who is a self-starter and has experience with complex litigation and plaintiff firms, especially in the areas of antitrust, securities, and consumer class actions.
It is crucial that the candidate be a quick responder and a good communicator. They will be working with attorneys and paralegals in other S+S offices, primarily through email and over the telephone, as well as sharing documents through our platform.
The candidate will handle their own case load where they will be responsible for familiarity with their cases and any upcoming deadlines. Must be detail-oriented and have superior organizational skills with the ability to prioritize high-volume work in a dynamic environment. The candidate must have strong grammar and editorial skills as well as experience in proofreading and conforming cites to the BlueBook rules.
The S+S paralegals’ role is to review briefs and other documents, specifically, proofreading and cite checking, occasionally drafting supporting documentation, and finalize, file, and serve them, as well as assist attorneys with discovery and case management. They are also responsible for proofreading, fact-checking, and filing complaints. Once filed, they also handle the service of the complaint and monitor the status of same, keeping the attorneys apprised during the process.
Since we file complaints in courts across the country, candidates should be familiar with, or be able to determine, pro hac vice procedures in a variety of courts and know how to prepare the paperwork for same.
Must also be an experienced e-filer, able to follow court procedural rules for state and federal courts across the country, researching procedures as necessary.
May also be called upon to perform factual research, background checks, or other case-related activities as assigned by an attorney.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The candidate must possess the ability to do the following:
- Provide support to multiple partners and associates while working under the guidance of a Paralegal Manager;
- Proofread and cite check all legal documents;
- Complete projects on time and accurately;
- E-filing in federal and state courts; and
- Be willing and available to work overtime (as needed).
EDUCATION REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s Degree, and
- Graduation from an ABA-approved program of study for paralegals, or
- Graduation from a course of study for paralegals which is institutionally accredited but not ABA approved, and which requires not less than the equivalent of 60 semester hours of classroom study.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate effectively and in a professional manner with all levels of the Firm and outside vendors;
- Proofreading and editorial skills, and advanced grammar knowledge;
- Knowledge of Bluebook citation procedure and other rules outlined in BlueBook;
- Ability to work in a diverse team environment and effectively support the demanding needs of the Firm;
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines with shifting priorities;
- Must be a self-starter with a high level of initiative;
- Strong customer service skills and able to anticipate needs;
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects;
- Maintains confidentiality and exercises discretion;
- Exercises solid strategic thinking and problem-solving skills;
- Considerable knowledge of technical legal terminology;
- Considerable knowledge of legal processes and procedures;
- Microsoft Office 365 and Kofax Power PDF;
- Bloomberg, Westlaw, LexisNexis File & Serve, Pacer, Courtdrive, and electronic filing procedures (both federal and state); and
- Experience with SharePoint document management system.
ADDITIONALLY:
- Minimum of seven (7) years relevant experience as a paralegal.
- Candidate will be tested on proofreading, grammar, punctuation, fact checking, and cite-checking skills at the time of the interview
