Job Title: General Counsel
Location: Bartow, FL
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced General Counsel to provide proactive legal services and act as the senior legal advisor. The General Counsel will work closely with the Board, Superintendent, and staff on all legal matters impacting the district's operations, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, managing litigation, and advising on policy and contract matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the legal advisor and parliamentarian for all School Board meetings.
- Provide legal advice to the Superintendent and district staff.
- Review and recommend policy and contract changes to ensure legal compliance.
- Manage and oversee legal documents related to property transactions, easements, and contracts.
- Supervise the Legal Secretary and coordinate with outside counsel.
- Conduct legal research and render legal opinions on education law and administrative procedures.
- Work closely with staff on contract negotiations, budget procedures, and litigation.
- Maintain active membership in legal associations and attend relevant seminars and workshops.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree.
- Member in good standing of The Florida Bar.
- Admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney with a focus on education, governmental, and/or administrative law.
- Strong knowledge of school law, civil litigation, administrative procedures, contract preparation, and real estate transactions.
Preferred:
- Florida Bar Board Certification in Education Law, City/County/Local Government Law, or Administrative Law.
- Experience with governmental bodies and collective bargaining.
- Bilingual/biliterate preferred.
Work Environment:
- Primarily an office-based role, with regular attendance at board meetings and workshops.
- Requires use of communication systems, coordination of multiple tasks, and collaboration with both internal and external contacts.
