Medical Laboratory Scientist
Summary:
Performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The level of laboratory analysis performed may range from point of care testing to complex testing, involving all major areas of the clinical laboratory including: Chemistry, Toxicology, Hematology, Coagulation, Immunology, Immunohematology, and Microbiology. Responsible for the overall operation of the FCP laboratory department to assure compliance and overall safe and quality lab services with all State and Federal laws and agency regulations and standards. Directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for all HWC’s laboratory services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain knowledge of CLIA/COLA standards, ensure standards are enforced, and prepare the Lab Services Department for a successful survey.
- Collaborate with clinic departments to ensure entry of data into the lab information system is accurate and there is proper billing.
- Oversight of department quality improvement initiatives which include annual quality improvement reports.
- Fiscal responsibility for areas of responsibility which includes preparing and maintaining department budgets and overseeing compliance throughout the fiscal year, time keeping review and approval.
- Establish and clearly communicate expectations for performance that include clinical competency, interpersonal skill, positive attitude, and teamwork among all members of the departments.
- Perform venipuncture and peripheral skin puncture to obtain quality blood samples for testing. Assure competency in same and train lab staff accordingly.
- Perform appropriate moderately complex and waived testing using both manual methods and automated analyzers.
- Display a strong understanding of automated analyzers and required quality assurance and maintenance procedures required.
- Assists in the total quality management in all aspects of training, testing, and quality review as directed by the Laboratory Director. Assists in quality assurance, adjusts control ranges, and proficiency testing activities.
- Uses knowledge of quality control to review and evaluate test or instrument performance.
Requirements (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent.
- ASCP or NCA certification or eligibility to apply.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and timely follow-up required.
- Cultural respect and sensitivity required.
- Word processing skills and comfort with multiple computer applications
- Must successfully pass all applicable background checks and drug screens
- FCP complies with all CDC vaccine and testing recommendations for healthcare professionals. Proof of immunizations is required and immunizations/testing provided upon hire.
Preferred Requirements:
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Medical Technologist.
- A minimum of 2 years previous Lab Supervisory experience is required by CLIA.
