As an Animal Care Technician, the candidate will perform routine and specialized duties associated with animal care, including feeding, medicating, cleaning, restraining, and transporting of laboratory animals. In addition to other species, this will include nonhuman primates, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits. The candidate will be required to adhere to all local, state, federal and company regulations, guidelines, and policies. The candidate will maintain and sanitize animal facilities and ensure adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment. The candidate will observe and report animal behavior and conditions and may be required to collect specimens and provide technical assistance to research and veterinary personnel as instructed. The candidate will participate in environmental enrichment programs as per departmental standard operating procedures. All procedures and tasks must be documented appropriately and in compliance with Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 58 which governs the conduct of non-clinical laboratory studies.
Employees in this position will participate in an occupational safety and health program which requires tuberculin testing and potentially immunization. Weekend work, holiday work and overtime hours are a requirement of this position. May be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster. Responsibilities must be performed with minimal instruction and persons will be expected to independently perform duties as described.
Qualifications
- High School diploma and 3 years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) highly desired.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must have the ability to work with nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species without jeopardizing the health status of the animals.
- Franklin maintains ABSL (animal biosafety levels) 2 facilities; ability to perform job duties while wearing respiratory protection may be required.
