Summary
The Senior Pharmacy Technician will have increased responsibilities, which require some professional judgement and problem-solving skills, as well as more complex day-to day functions. This position performs daily dispensing duties that were previously only performed by Pharmacists, thus allowing the Pharmacist more time to perform clinical duties.
Responsibilities
(20%) Able to perform all of Pharmacy Technician duties and responsibilities.
(20%) Chemotherapy Compounding: staffs the Infusion Center pharmacy; performs Infusion Center pharmacy inventory management; calculates chemotherapy dosages; prepares sterile and non sterile chemotherapy compounds following USP 797 and USP 795 guidelines; and performs daily, monthly, and ad hoc deactivation/decontamination/cleaning/disinfection of designated IV room areas using MyMichigan?approved cleaning solutions.
(15%) Qualified to receive verbal orders by phone directly from physicians or nurses, including "NOW" and "STAT" orders. May answer common IV compatibility questions under the direction of the pharmacist on duty. Determines which calls need to be referred to a Pharmacist.
(15%) Double checks 24 hour cart fill medications from random check report generated by the McKesson robot.
(15%) Able to trouble shoot all equipment, e.g., Omnicell, RX Station, McKesson robot, McKesson repackager, PacMed computers, printers, automated dispensing machine and the Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) compounder.
(15%) Staff the Coumadin Clinic, able to do daily charging, scanning, patient scheduling, ordering supplies, and assist the pharmacist on duty with additional tasks.
Certifications and Licensures
- PHARM TECH - Pharmacy Technician Licensure
- Required Equivalent Experience - New hire and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or limited pharmacy license through the state of Michigan. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician temporary, limited or full license through the state of Michigan Individuals with a temporary license must obtain a full license through the state of Michigan within 365 days of obtaining the temporary license.
Required Education
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Comments: Associate's Degree in relate field with emphasis on math and science preferred.
