Job Summary Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director and the Director of Laboratory Services, and Laboratory Manager. Assists technical personnel with assigned tasks, instrument maintenance, and inventory. Receives patients, correctly identifies patients, collects specimens from patients, transports specimens, and processes specimens.
Core Job Responsibilities - Identifying appropriate priority of tasks, establishes and maintains lines of communication and rapport within the department and other hospital personnel
- Demonstrates knowledge on computer software and specimen management
- Ensures priority of requests, arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care
- Manages inventory
- Receives in and distributes reagents and supplies
- Assists in Medical Center sponsored blood drives
- Adheres to confidentiality of patient information with interdepartmental and external request Demonstrates ethical, honest and professionalism with all internal and external consumers
- Ensures accuracy with specimen receiving, issuing blood products, and performs instrument maintenance following standard procedures
- Uses department equipment (telephone, computers, software) appropriately
- Ensures timely turnaround of patient results (turnaround times, unfinished work list(s), distribution of results, communication with consumers)
- Follows up on internal and external departmental request
- Participates in educational opportunities and identifies area of departmental process improvement Correct tests are drawn and collected and orders are checked against computer system for accuracy and discrepancies resolved
- Performs specimen collection as needed
- Adheres to envoi mental standards for patient/visitor/staff safety
- Practices hand washing and sanitation practices
- Reports unsafe conditions and responds appropriately to all codes and drills
- Practices standard precautions with all chemical and specimen handling
- Stocks and re-orders supplies
- Cleans and disinfect work areas, refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, plasma thawers, etc.
Education/Experience Requirements Required: Minimum 2 year degree in Science - such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry
Preferred: Phlebotomy work experience, lab assistant work experience, or other healthcare experience preferred
