SUMMARY:
Precision Metal Works, manufactures metal stamped parts and components for the appliance and automotive industries. We have approximately 200 team members and two manufacturing facilities in Louisville, and one in Frankfort KY. Our facilities boast 36 plus stamping presses, a state-of-the-art powder coating line, robotic welding, cosmetic stainless-steel finishing and numerous assembly operations.
Precision Metal Works has an immediate opening for a Tooling Engineer. The tooling engineer’s role is spilt between operational support for problem resolution and New Product Introduction. Application of root cause analysis, development of corrective action plans, preventive maintenance plans and updating AutoCAD and Solidworks tool drawings. The Tooling Engineer will be involved in all phases of the project – from tooling quotes to installation and commissioning of the tools
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operational Support
- Problem tool evaluation utilizing root cause analysis to determine reasons for poor tool performance related to productivity, set up or Quality issues. Develops a corrective action plan to improve the tool, monitors and implements plan.
- Develops and reviews Preventive maintenance procedures for all tooling updating where necessary to ensure continued tool performance.
- Assist tool room with periodic problem solving developing toolmakers to utilize root cause analysis to correct issues.
- Maintain die drawings using AutoCAD, Solidworks to reflect all changes performed to the tool details.
- New Product Introduction & Engineering Change
- Ability to quote tools and assists quote development for engineering changes on existing tools utilizing knowledge of tool design and tool performance.
- Participate in customer meetings early on in the tooling design process, clearly understanding the technical requirements and translating them into manufacturing requirements. Participate in the detailed due diligence and technical reviews with both customer and tooling source. Takes opportunity to fix existing tool problems when a change opportunity exists.
- Attends feasibility review to ensure all potential tooling and or part design issues are addressed, communicates to the selected tool vendor.
- Manage tool progress at tool vendor to ensure timely completion of tool.
- Performs run off at vendor, evaluates tool vendor dimensional layout and resolves any issues prior to releasing the tool for delivery to Precision.
- Process sign off at Precision ensuring all aspects of the tool are complete including run at rate, quality sign off, sensor performance and preventive maintenance procedures
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Traveling to manufacturing plants and factories when required to gather information and liaise with manufacturing and outsource design teams
- Negotiating with vendors and contractors to secure the best price for tooling.
- Scheduling meetings with management and outside tooling sources as required.
- Interface with program management, design teams and functional engineering organizations to obtain agreement on tooling requirements and resolve/clarify/revise program requirements issues and ambiguities in design during the program development phase
Develop standard processes for comprehensive work instructions where required.
