Summary:
Willdan Energy Solutions (WES), part of Willdan Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: WLDN) is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer. WES is a national leader in energy engineering and our clients include utilities, municipalities, hospitals, schools, hotels, and private enterprises.
As a Senior Engineer, the ideal applicant will be responsible for a variety of technical functions that will ensure our client’s programs and projects are executed using industry best practices as well as providing support for internal teams. This role will include interacting with customers, outside partners, and other Willdan divisions, and mentoring and reviewing the work of less experienced engineers.
The candidate will assess clients’ energy and sustainability needs and goals, develop near-term and long-term solutions, and create reports and other materials that effectively communicate the desired approaches to the clients’ stakeholder groups. In support of these broad tasks, candidate will take a leadership role and manage facilities and energy data processing, facilities assessment and field inspections, development and application of software tools, as well as life-cycle performance evaluation of alternative solutions.
The ideal candidate will have a background in energy, sustainability, or a related field, with a focus on energy management and sustainability, and demonstrated work experience in energy programs and/or consulting and/or planning with a variety of clients. Responsibilities Include but not limited to:
- Maintain direct client relationships and manage client requests with professionalism and attention.
- Work on and manage time between a variety of technical tasks, including maintaining client/stakeholder relationships, and managing and participating in team tasks such as: project site assessments, energy audits, engineering analysis, cost estimating, and production of interim and final deliverables.
- Manage projects, including all technical aspects of planning, scoping, budgeting, scheduling, deciding technical approach, delegation of tasks, ensuring technical quality, overseeing implementation, and tracking results. Ensure client expectations are met or exceeded and project outcomes are exceptional.
- Manage task assignments within allotted hours/budget and scale efforts to ensure clients are receiving maximum value for agreed upon budgets.
- Work and communicate effectively with professionals from varying departmental levels (both public and private sector); adequately managing differing priorities.
- Coordinate, lead and participate in client and other stakeholder meetings; coordinate team member involvement as required.
- Manage long term client relationships between active projects.
- Support new business development for work of this type.
- Train and mentor junior engineering staff.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum of 6-8 years’ experience in energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, and/or facilities energy management and sustainability planning.
- Understanding of energy conservation, electrification, and decarbonization principles and calculation techniques.
- Ability to develop client/client-stakeholder facing energy and sustainability planning reports and other presentation materials.
- Ability to lead, delegate, coordinate, and track project team tasks, including senior level subject matter experts, and junior engineers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical staff and clients.
- Works well in a collaborative work environment; comfortable engaging with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency with MS Office programs.
Desired:
- Experience with distributed energy resources such as solar, wind, battery energy storage, and cogeneration systems and their related infrastructure.
- Experience with building systems including HVAC equipment and mechanical/electrical systems (such as chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, chilled and hot water loops, boilers, motors, pumps, and variable speed drives), lighting technologies, building automation and control systems, and process loads such as refrigeration and data center infrastructure.
- Experience conducting facility energy and carbon impact assessments and data collection.
- Professional Engineer license and/or applicable certifications.
- Proficiency with energy modeling software, such as eQUEST, Energy Toolbase, Universal Translator 3, and self-developed spreadsheet-based tools.
- Familiarity with Municipal customer operations, including local government operations, public works departments, sustainability departments, and associated local government CAPEX and OPEX funding approaches.
- Familiarity with institutional customer operations (e.g., Universities and College Districts).
- Familiarity with local government partnership programs (LGPs), community choice aggregators (CCAs), and regional energy networks (RENs).
- Understanding of California energy efficiency policy and program requirements.
- Experience working within California utility energy efficiency programs.
- Familiarity with construction practices, including project permitting, trades/sub-contractor management, cost estimating, performance contracting, and commissioning.
- Familiarity with EV technologies.
Education and Certifications:
- B.S. in energy, sustainability, or engineering related discipline.
- Professional Engineer License (preferred but not required)
