Sr. EHS Specialist - Reedsville, PA
Position Summary
Reporting to the VP EHS and Quality Assurance, the Sr. EHS Specialist is responsible for directing the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of EHS programs at multiple business sites to achieve goals and objectives related to safety, employee health, and environment compliance. This position has the responsibility to manage other EHS/ Safety associates and to engage the BU’s site leadership to ensure excellence related meeting EHS objectives and to ensure that each site’s EHS goals are aligned with those of the business and corporation.
Additionally, the position will lead the corporate-wide safety initiative STOP® for Each Other and will work with the leadership teams at multiple locations to achieve the objective.
Essential Functions
- Directs the development of other EHS associates within your assigned business unit(s) or locations.
- Works with the leadership teams at multiple sites to guide and assist in the maintenance of and to drive improvement into the environmental, health and safety management systems.
- Facilitates implementation and/or maintenance of EHS management systems designed to reduce employee injuries and illnesses including proactively supporting the Jadex behavior-based safety programs (STOP®). This involves recommending, developing, and implementing improvements in training, policies, procedures, behaviors, ergonomics, and equipment to prevent incidents and injuries.
- Leads the implementation of one corporate-wide safety initiative (STOP® for Each Other).
- Tracks, reports, and drives closure on EHS corrective actions from STOP® Observations, incident investigations and regulatory evaluations.
- Ensures that occupational illnesses and injuries are thoroughly investigated and promptly addressed (including assisting in associate care if local), prompt record keeping, and reporting.
- Leads the safety committee at your primary site and participate in the safety committees at the other BU sites as requested.
- Assures compliance with site regulatory environmental permits (recordkeeping, reporting, permitting and renewal) by providing direction needed to support regulatory compliance.
- Interfaces with agencies and regulatory contacts in a professional manner.
- Provides and/or directs plant environmental & safety training for multiple sites.
- Participates in the review of capital and other projects from the perspective of EH&S, when asked.
- Supports and leads ergonomic and/or wellness activities.
- Participates in providing 24-hour on call response for medical and environmental emergencies for your local site. Coordinates facility emergency response and site evacuation programs, including the design and execution of annual drills and emergency response communication.
- Participates in special events outside of normal working hours such as safety celebrations, special training, incident investigations, or other events that might arise from time to time.
- Inspects processes to detect existing or potential environmental, safety and health hazards, determines corrective or preventive measures and follow-up to ensure measures have been implemented.
Required competencies and skills:
- Applied knowledge of environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, and ability to research specific regulations and/or interpretations.
- Ability to present information to groups of associates.
- Demonstrates a high concern for detail, accuracy, and compliance to company and corporate policies and procedures as well as compliance reports.
- Ability to work with and lead cross functional groups, strong team leader.
- Excellent computer skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and STOP® DataPro.
- Proven time management skills.
- Independent worker requiring minimal day-to-day direction or oversight.
- Energetic, motivated individual, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact with professionals at all levels.
Required Education and/or Experience:
- Certifications in environmental, health, and/or safety.
- 5-10 years of related experience in leading a site’s safety or EHS systems with significant demonstrated success.
- Professional knowledge of regulatory standards (OSHA, GMP, Fire Code, EPA, RCRA, DOT) for manufacturing environments.
- Trained as a STOP® for Supervision and STOP for Each Other instructor.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
- BS degree in engineering, environmental science or health, or safety related degrees a plus.
- CSP certification a plus.
- Experience with implementing ISO management systems a plus.
- Hands-on experience working within the BU a plus.
Physical Demands:
Persons in this position will be expected to be active and able to stand for extended periods of time, be able to kneel, crawl, stoop, crouch, and bend, climb ladders, push and/or pull with force including finger manipulation. Lifting of 20 pounds may be required. Must be able to hear well and able to lead in emergency situations. Must be willing to travel.
