POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Engineering is responsible for overseeing the architecture, development, and management of both front-end and back-end services for the company’s internally developed hybrid CMS/LMS solution. This individual will lead efforts to decompose a complex web-service into scalable, manageable services, leverage containerization, and optimize the use of Azure-based infrastructure. With a strong foundation in systems architecture and backend service development, this role will also collaborate with front-end developers to ensure a cohesive and efficient engineering team, capable of delivering high-performance solutions.

OBJECTIVES
- Lead the architectural restructuring of a complex backend web-service, decomposing it into smaller, more scalable services, potentially leveraging containerization solutions within Azure.
- Oversee the development and optimization of the company’s Azure SQL Server instance, identifying opportunities to move business logic to more appropriate layers, such as caching services or dedicated web-services.
- Manage and support the front-end development team working with React, ensuring that the front-end aligns with backend services and overall system architecture.
- Guide the transition from a monolithic architecture to a microservices-based structure, focusing on scalability, maintainability, and performance optimization.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that engineering efforts align with business objectives and that the CMS/LMS solution continues to evolve in line with strategic goals.
- Lead and mentor the engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, quality, and continuous improvement in both front-end and back-end development.
COMPETENCIES
- Strong Systems Architecture Expertise: Proven experience in designing and managing scalable backend systems, with a deep understanding of microservices architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud infrastructure (Azure).
- Backend Services Development: Expertise in decomposing monolithic applications into smaller, manageable services, with knowledge of web-services, API development, and server management (IIS, SQL Server).
- Azure Cloud Proficiency: Deep understanding of Azure services, including VM management, SQL Server (Azure SQL Managed Instance), containerization (AKS), and other cloud-native services.
- Front-End Familiarity: Experience working with front-end technologies, particularly React, with the ability to guide and collaborate with front-end developers to ensure system-wide alignment.
- Database Optimization: Strong understanding of SQL Server architecture, with the ability to simplify and optimize data storage, and move business logic from the database layer to more appropriate services.
- Leadership and Team Management: Ability to lead and mentor both front-end and back-end development teams, fostering a collaborative, high-performance engineering culture.
- Strategic Thinking and Execution: Ability to align engineering efforts with business strategy, ensuring that technical solutions meet both immediate and long-term organizational goals.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience in software development, with a strong emphasis on systems architecture and backend service management.
- Proven experience leading teams in transitioning from monolithic architectures to microservices, with a focus on Azure infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (Azure).
- Strong background in leading both front-end and back-end development teams, ensuring seamless collaboration and alignment.
