The California Chamber of Commerce (CalChamber) is the largest broad-based business advocate to government in California. Membership represents one-quarter of the private sector jobs in California and includes firms of all sizes and companies from every industry within the state. Leveraging our front-line knowledge of laws and regulations, we provide products and services to help businesses comply with both federal and state law. CalChamber, a not-for-profit organization with roots dating to 1890, promotes international trade and investment in order to stimulate California’s economy and create jobs.
SUMMARY: The Vice President, Small Business Advocacy leads CalChamber’s grassroots advocacy program, including relationships with local chambers of commerce and business associations, CalChamber small business members and participants in CalChamber’s grassroots legislative programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop, maintain, and coordinate relationships with local chambers throughout the State, including coordinating scheduled legislative call series, communicating relevant and timely information on legislation and political events, as well as supporting local government affairs programs;
- Coordinate with the EVP of Policy on activating and organizing local chambers on priority legislation with calls, emails, and letters to legislative branch and executive branch;
- Work with EVP of Policy and President/CEO on expanding and growing statewide grassroots effort through partnerships with other organizations, organizing in district events with business owners, and supporting development of relationships with local businesses and elected officials;
- Oversee the development and startup of the Small Business Policy Council and Small Business Policy Center. Developing opportunities for small business-focused educational, technical assistance and advocacy initiatives.
- Oversee and manage business partnerships with local chambers of commerce on sale of products and training;
- Oversee and manage building relationships and partnerships with other statewide organizations to expand grassroots network and business partnerships;
DESIRED QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Prior experience with local chambers
- Legislative advocacy experience;
- Political experience, including working on local or statewide campaigns;
- Strong public speaking
- Strong writing skills
- Travel (frequent the first year or two)
