Job Description
SUMMARY: To achieve timely, cost-effective production and shipment of quality grating products through the supervision of the activities of the plant work force.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and coordinate the overall manufacturing operation for the plant, including production and shipping schedules.
- Review production and inspection reports. Assure proper reporting from plant to office. Follows up on problem areas to assure schedules are met and problems are resolved.
- Oversee the plant maintenance function to assure plant is maintained. A good maintenance background a plus.
- Manage plant operations and maintenance with hands on approach.
- Oversee plant quality systems.
- Assist in the design and modification of systems and equipment and assures compliance with company and governmental rules and regulations in the plant.
- Hire, train and supervise the plant supervisory work force which is directly responsible for the direction of the daily activities of an hourly work force engaged in production, maintenance and shipping.
- Attend production meetings and conducts monthly safety meetings.
- Handle some customer problems directly.
- Assure the implementation of company policies and procedures relating to manufacturing, safety, and personnel.
- Responsible for the maintenance of good employee relations in the plant and for the proper administration of the company/union contract.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position directly supervises all Channelview Production Foremen, Inventory Control Specialist, and hourly shop employees in the performance of their assigned duties.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- At least 2 years of a college education or an associate’s degree in industrial engineering. Four-year degree from an accredited college or university is desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a plant supervisory role. Specific experience within a manufacturing environment is highly desirable. Heavy industrial or manufacturing experience is desirable.
- Lean manufacturing and/or Continuous Improvement experience desirable. Experience in leading CI events, Kai sans, and/or Six Sigma certification is a plus.
- Mechanical aptitude – prefer hands on experience with mechanical and/or electrical background.
- Hands on management style.
- Must have excellent written, oral communications, and administrative skills.
- Must have excellent people, supervisory, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven leadership ability to influence, develop, and empower employees to achieve objectives with a team approach.
- Must be extremely detail oriented and able to effectively manage large amounts of information.
- Proven ability to self-manage in a dynamic, fast-paced, high-pressure environment
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel software. Manufacturing software desirable.

The physical activity of this position involves working primarily with hand dexterity or arm, and talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken and electronic word with customers and fellow employees. This position requires both sedentary work involving sitting as well as walking and standing in the plant environment. The visual acuity requirements are minimal with work dealing largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, work on a computer terminal and reading. Environmental conditions are that of an open plant environment with bay door type exposure to the elements.
Work Environment: Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. The physical activity of this position involves standing and walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds and talking, conveying detailed or important instructions to employees accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing involves the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. The position requires medium work exertion with visual acuity requirements that include seeing a job that is within arm's reach, occasionally visual inspection involving small defects or small parts at distances close to the eyes. The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. There is sufficient noise to cause the employees to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. The employee may be subject to paint fumes, dust, and toxins that may affect the respiratory system. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to, eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hardhats.

Hours: 7:00 am to 4:00 pm
The hours and days may vary slightly
The Plant Production Superintendent will be expected to visit plant when off shifts as well as anytime special projects are in progress. Also, bi-annual inventory operations may require a Saturday when needed
