JOB SUMMARY
The Desktop Engineer is a key member of the IT team responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the desktop infrastructure. This role requires a deep understanding of desktop operating systems, hardware, and software, as well as strong problem-solving and communication skills. This includes, but is not limited to, provisioning, configuration, management, and support of the workstation operating system, design, implementation, and maintenance of automated software distribution and system management technologies, and packaging and distribution of applications and updates.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Infrastructure Management:
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the desktop infrastructure, including hardware and software.
- Manage and optimize virtual and physical desktop environments.
- Ensure compliance with security standards and best practices.
- Proactively monitor infrastructure for potential issues and take corrective action.
- Manage and maintain accurate license information.
- Deployment and Migration:
- Build and maintain image and deployment process
- Plan and execute desktop deployments and migrations, such as Windows 10 to Windows 11.
- Package and deploy software using PowerShell, VBScript, and Intune.
- Manage third-party patching.
- Create and edit MSI installers.
- Scripting and Automation:
- Utilize Windows batch and PowerShell scripting to automate repetitive tasks and improve efficiency.
- Develop and maintain scripts for common desktop management activities.
- Manage and maintain Windows AutoPilot.
- Use workstation monitoring tools, develop queries and reports, create custom inventory and events, and provide data-driven analysis of the workstation environment.
- Support and Troubleshooting:
- Provide Level 3 support for service desk staff, troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues.
- Collaborate with other IT teams to resolve complex problems.
- Document troubleshooting processes and knowledge base articles.
- Technology Evaluation and Implementation:
- Research and evaluate new desktop technologies to improve efficiency and security.
- Recommend suitable technology updates for long- and short-term planning.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with IT managers and supervisors to develop strategic solutions.
- Collaborate with various IT teams (security, server, client services, network, applications) for troubleshooting.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation.
- Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in desktop technology across an enterprise.
- Experience managing Windows endpoints with Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager.
- Minimum of five years of experience with packaging, software distribution, and troubleshooting software installation errors.
- Proficiency in PowerShell, VBScript, and scripting languages.
- Experience with Group Policy, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), Active Directory, BitLocker, Office 365, Microsoft Endpoint Manager Intune, Azure Arc, Azure, M365 and Conditional Access.
- Certification(s) in area of specialty is a plus
ADDITIONAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS
- Strong understanding of Windows operating systems, hardware, and software.
- Experience with desktop workspace management tools, mobile device management, vulnerability patching, asset management, and capacity management.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to be a part of on-call schedule.
- Exceptional organization, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to conduct research into application development issues and products.
- Experience within manufacturing company environments.
- Strong communication across all levels of the company.
