Role and Responsibilities: Under direction of the Director of Planning, Policy, and Economic Development, the Assistant Director will assist in the overall administration of a comprehensive planning, redevelopment, community development and economic expansion of the City of East Orange. The Assistant Director will help lead and oversee the department’s Community Planning and Development programs; performs other related tasks as required:
- Assist in the overall supervision of the department.
- Assist in the administration of programs including budget, capital improvements and other planning, community development, economic development and redevelopment activities.
- Improve the department’s online presence and outreach activities.
- Act as a liaison to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, other governmental agencies and units, and local community groups and stakeholders.
- Assist in developing and implementing the organization's long-term goals and objectives.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Five (5) years of experience in municipal, county, regional, or state planning, coordination, control of redevelopment and/or community development, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. Experience in administering CDBG and Home programs and compliance activities a must. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master's degree in planning, Public or Business Administration from an accredited college or university is preferred.
NOTE: Applicants who do not meet the above education requirement may substitute additional experience as indicated below on a year-for-year basis with thirty (30) semester hour credits being equal to one (1) year of experience.

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, ordinances and codes to ensure the department is compliant.
