Position:
Working as part of the fundraising team and reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Giving creates and implements strategies to inspire individual donor prospects to make meaningful gifts in support of Canopy Village (formerly Children's Village) and its fundraising priorities. The Director of Giving focuses on donors and prospects capable of making gifts from $10,000+ and will be responsible for meeting an annual revenue target with monthly goals. This role is also responsible for managing the Canopy Village Philanthropy Council, a new leadership committee that serves as a feeder to the Board of Directors as well as securing new giving opportunities and auction items for the annual fundraiser. The Canopy Village Philanthropy Council is a local volunteer leadership group that should consist of 8 – 12 volunteers who are responsible for making donor referrals to help build Canopy Village's mid-level and major gift donor networks in their communities. As a member of the development team, the Director of Giving works alongside the Development Manager to secure funding for annual events, campaigns, and other initiatives as assigned. All donor stewardship for Director of Giving will be captured in Salesforce in a formal moves management program.
Foundation and individual staff goals are set annually and are expected to grow toward the Foundation's strategic plan and annual fundraising plan.
Location:
Office is in Coeur d'Alene, but regional prospecting is expected. The work location is in person, but time expected to be used in donor meetings and events for up to 70% of time when not scheduled to grant write or administrative constituent relationship management. Regional work and prospecting may include travel when necessary.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Giving has annual fundraising goals based on prospects currently in the officer's portfolio and future prospects. New business is expected to be 50% of their worked prospects.
Fundraising
- Planning: In conjunction with the CEO and Development Manager, lead the development of the annual plan for Canopy Village Foundation's fundraising plan, leading to increased donors, donations, and donor referrals.
- Portfolio: Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 200 mid to major-level donor prospects ($10,000+) with the goal of ensuring donors are retained, upgraded and moved along the trajectory toward becoming major gift or planned giving donors.
- Qualification: Regularly conduct qualification calls, emails and visits to annual fund level donors to work to qualify their interest and capacity to give at the mid-level ($10,000+)
- Discovery: Conduct discovery conversations with donor prospects and referrals from Board and Council members. Work closely with assigned prospect development staff to determine the best candidates and provide referrals to development when threshold is lower than $10,000.
- Relationship Building: The Director of Giving develops authentic relationships with donors in a focused portfolio to discover donor interests to help them accomplish their philanthropic goals in alignment with Canopy Village (formerly Children's Village) Foundation organizational priorities. The Director of Giving conducts calls/visits and develops customized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans.
- Solicitations: Solicit and close one-time and pledged gifts at the $10,000+ level, and partner on planned gifts of all levels where possible.
Canopy Village Philanthropy Council Management
- Development: Create and implement council
- Meetings: Plan, implement and evaluate meaningful, results-oriented quarterly council meetings. Work closely with the chair and the appropriate Development staff to ensure that meetings make the best use of volunteer and staff time. Incorporate best practices in meeting management.
- Fundraising goal setting: Set clear, action-oriented goals for volunteers aligned with Foundation goals
- Recruitment: Continually assess current membership and consider new individuals who will bring value to Canopy Village Foundation.
- Evaluation: Conduct ongoing evaluation of council.
Grant Writing
- Prospecting: maintain in salesforce a pipeline of timelines of grants, with assistance from Development Manager
- Writing: two days per month devoted to grant writing with a defined monetary goal
- Reporting: responsible for the reporting requirements of each grant with assistance from administrative office staff and Development Manager
Administrative
- Administrative: Maintain accountability to administrative systems and procedures including submitting expense reimbursements, credit card reconciliations, invoices, reports, RCF calendar additions, etc., by the deadlines assigned.
- Meetings: Prepare for and actively participate in all Canopy Village Foundation meetings as appropriate. Ensure expectations and tools for meeting agendas and follow-up are implemented.
- Budget: Work with CEO to develop, manage and monitor the budget, staying within overall budget guidelines.
- Technology: Understand and effectively use the technology available at the Canopy Village. Primary software is Salesforce and Microsoft Office / Teams, secondarily QuickBooks.
- Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with all foundation policies, as well as local, state and federal laws that govern business practices.
Canopy Village Foundation Representative
- Presentations: Represent Canopy Village Foundation through delivering public speeches about the organization and its mission to the external public.
- Tours: Give tours of the residential homes and family support center, and provide information on Canopy Village.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Canopy Village Foundation Events: Participate in Canopy Village Foundation events as requested.
Requirements:
Education/Experience:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.
- Education: Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree or CFRE preferred.
- Experience: 4-6 years of progressive fundraising experience including gifts of $10k and above. High level of knowledge of an overall donor or customer experience model. Proven experience in prospect research and constituent relationship management.
- Skills: Solid relationship building. Ability to interact successfully with others, both in person and through phone, e-mail, and written correspondence. Understanding of individual donor needs and perceptions. Strong ability to speak in public. Excellent written communication. Sensitivity to needs of donors. Problem-solving, research and analytical skills. Attention to detail and organization. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products with a key focus on Word, Excel and Outlook; experience with SharePoint is a plus. Proficiency in use of databases is required, preferably Salesforce.

- Must complete all background requirements: pass a pre-employment drug screen, acknowledgement of child abuse reporting responsibility, criminal record statement and receive satisfactory clearance from all licensing and investigative authorities. Employment is contingent upon receiving a clearing from appropriate authorities.
