Job Details:The Pharmacy Technician II assists the pharmacist with the preparation of medications for dispensing. The technician performs various technical and supportive tasks necessary to provide pharmacy services. The pharmacy technician II works under supervision of the pharmacist, and focuses on accurate medication preparation following established policy and procedures set forth by the Pharmacy Department. This role meets the requirements of being a qualified pharmacy technician as established by the State Board of Pharmacy and holds a Certified Pharmacy Technician license from a State Board of Pharmacy accredited agency. The technician complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration, along with other regulatory agencies. The pharmacy technician II has mastered job duties and responsibilities and takes active part in training technicians and quality improvement projects.
Department Specific Job Details:1. Assist the pharmacist
- Works under direct supervision of the pharmacist on duty
- Prepares medications and properly displays product for pharmacist to verify and dispense.
- Appropriately labels all medications prior to verification.
- Understands technician role vs pharmacist role and adheres to regulations established by the State Board of Pharmacy
- Consults pharmacist with questions pertaining to patient care and ensures procedures are followed appropriately.
- Works cooperatively with other technicians and pharmacists to ensure overall goal of medication preparation is performed accurately and efficiently.
- Responds to requests by the pharmacist to assist in various roles with the department based on need.
- Assists in expired drug process and procedures.
- Understands process of sorting order and importance of 340 B purchasing
2. Hospital Pharmacy Functions
- Sends order checked by the pharmacist in the tube system promptly and accurately, including taking part in communicating with nursing staff.
- Answers the phone promptly and directs caller to the appropriate person.
- Files physician orders according to the established filing system, including separating controls and non-controls.
- Maintains integrity of pharmaceutical products throughout preparation
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
- Manufactures bulk medications for unit of use. Follows quality control procedures and proper labeling procedures.
- Understands the Stericycle guidelines and containers
- Understands and responds to aeroscout alerts
- Understand Meds to Beds workflow with active participation.
- Understands Curbside Delivery and participates in workflow.
3. Pyxis Med station
- Adheres to all requirements for access of Pyxis and follows SOP when filling prescriptions for patients
- Notifies pharmacist of any narcotic discrepancies immediately
- Understand process for loading/unloading mediations in pyxis
- Can evaluate inventory in pyxis and recognize when inventory should be moved around to accommodate for usage and drug shortages.
4. Outpatient Pharmacy Functions
- Answers outpatient window and assists customers
- Obtains necessary information for processing prescriptions including date of birth, weight, allergies, demographic information, and insurance
- Enters patient demographics and insurance into the computer system accurately
- Enters both paper and e-scribed prescriptions into the computer system accurately
- Has a strong understanding of DAW codes, days' supply, origin codes, and ICD-10 codes
- Can use eligibility check in computer system and understands basic insurance troubleshooting
- Prepares medication, labels appropriately, and displays for pharmacist to verify
- Understands when to void, reverse, and retransmit claims
- Can properly re-bill previously checked out claims
- Can add a new prescriber into outpatient computer system and knows how to update electronic information
- Assists customers at the pickup window and utilizes prescription signature pad or correctly uses the tablet to deliver prescription to the car or room
- Operates cash register, credit card machine, and payroll deduction machine properly
- Can locate presumptive eligibility in epic and understands needy patient fund process
- Maintains and orderly work environment to maintain integrity of prescriptions
- Compounds oral suspensions following established formulas using Fillmaster
- Sorts/Files prescriptions in a complete and orderly manner
- Assists in Maintaining adequate inventory through outpatient computer system
- Can accurately load a new drug into outpatient computer system or products in point of sale
- Can use transaction history to find past transactions in POS
- Understands outpatient computer system functions including: refill too soon, IVR, on order, owe procedure, auto-refill function, prior authorization processing, and texting
- Ensures prior authorization follow-up including communication with the patient
- Maintains will call bins including refill to stock of over two weeks, texting completion and MTM opportunities
- Prepares and submits bank deposits, runs payroll deduction report daily
- Can issue a refund thru point of sale
- Knows how and when to submit an OARRS report and documents accordingly
- Can place an OTC order and codes correctly
- Understand difference of account numbers for primary wholesaler and can aid in preparation of daily drug orders including naming and coding
- Can run/utilize most reports in outpatient computer system including negative on hand, compounding queue, etc
- Can effectively manage inventory based on reporting functions in outpatient computer system including last used and usage
- Understands process for returning drugs to wholesaler
- Assists in the process and preparation of non-sterile compounds
- Familiar with the Vaccines for Children requirements and workflow
5. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Participates in training of new technicians on outpatient and hospital duties, pyxis procedures, and sterile drug preparation
- Participates in departmental quality improvement projects
Education:Certification/Licensure:- CPhT - Certified Pharmacy Technician - State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy is required
