Profile Summary:
Our client is a leading U.S. shipbuilder, specializing in advanced vessels for military and commercial markets. We are seeking an experienced EH&S professional with 5-10 years of progressive experience in safety and environmental management, particularly within shipbuilding. Shipyard experience is essential for this role due to the unique demands of maritime operations. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully developing and implementing EH&S programs, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and driving continuous improvement in safety and environmental sustainability. Leadership skills, complex problem-solving abilities, and experience in a unionized environment are crucial to the success of this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, implement, and manage EH&S programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain and improve safety management systems (ISO 14001/ISO 45001).
- Integrate EH&S considerations into various operational aspects of the company.
- Stay updated on changes in environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements.
- Conduct risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards.
- Collaborate with department managers on corrective actions and continuous improvements.
- Develop and deliver EH&S training programs for all levels of employees.
- Foster a culture of safety and environmental responsibility through education and communication.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and recommend preventive measures.
- Prepare reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
- Implement sustainability initiatives to enhance environmental stewardship.
- Align EH&S initiatives with the overall business strategy and provide strategic guidance on emerging trends.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a comprehensive EH&S approach.
- Track and communicate EH&S goals, initiatives, and performance metrics.
- Support the management of worker's compensation cases and MOD rating tracking.
- Abide by and enforce all organizational policies and procedures.
- Display agility and urgency, as the dynamic shipyard environment involves coordinating multiple entities towards common goals.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct supervision of 1-3 employees.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, and resolving issues.
- Demonstrate leadership aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the company.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Management, or a related field.
- 5-10 years of progressive experience in environment, safety, and sustainability management.
- Proven EH&S management experience, including successful program development and implementation.
- Experience in a union environment.
- Strong knowledge of safety and environmental regulations (OSHA, Maritime, EPCRA, CAA, CWA, SARAIII).
- Familiarity with best practice safety and environmental approaches.
- Shipbuilding experience is required to be successful in this role.
SKILLS:
- Certified First Responder or the ability to gain certification.
