Job Purpose:
Support attorneys and investigators by conducting thorough research and investigation into case-specific issues, managing broader research projects, and enhancing our proprietary product identification database. The role involves sourcing, organizing, and inputting valuable information for use in legal cases, ensuring data accuracy, and improving access to critical resources for the legal team.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct research on a variety of sources such as National Archive documents, depositions, trial transcripts, and interrogatories.
- Manage, categorize, and input case-related information into the product identification database (MPID).
- Ensure the accessibility and availability of critical legal information by memorializing and organizing it within the database.
- Provide research assistance for attorneys, explaining document access methods and streamlining data retrieval for the legal team.
- Research defendants, job sites, co-workers, ships, and other case-related entities using online databases and tools like LexisNexis and MPID.
- Summarize depositions, trial transcripts, and client work history for attorney use.
- Respond to bankruptcy requests by researching and locating necessary documentation.
- Conduct off-site document retrieval and assist in field research, including travel to client or defendant locations.
- Perform investigative workups with confidentiality, while adhering to ethical and legal standards.
- Work with a variety of research databases including SIS, MPID, GroupWise, and others to manage case information.
Key Responsibilities:
- Summarize complex legal and deposition documents into concise memoranda for attorney use.
- Maintain a strong understanding of liability for contractors, premises, and manufacturers, particularly in asbestos-related cases.
- Research potential defendants and witnesses, incorporating findings into case preparations.
- Manage multiple tasks simultaneously, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in research processes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- 1-2 years of experience in research or investigations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to type at least 35 words per minute.
- Proficiency in legal research tools and databases (LexisNexis, MPID, GroupWise).
- Knowledge of Windows OS, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and other relevant software.
- Keen attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
