Position Summary
Responsible for the engineering, build, installation / configuration, operation, and maintenance of network and related monitoring systems to ensure stability, reliability and acceptable performance. Provides functional and empirical analysis related to the planning, design, installation, and implementation of the network infrastructure. Plans and develops the detailed engineering, design and implementation of the Medical Center’s network environment. Plans and performs upgrades of network systems hardware and support systems in accordance with ITIL best practices. Responsible for network systems projects that range from medium to large in scope, risk and impact. Leads and facilitates strategic projects involved in evaluating and researching new and existing products, procedures and/or workflows needs associated with network systems for the Medical Center. Researches current and developing technologies to provide technical guidance pertaining to the capabilities, limitations and requirements of network systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of this position are performed under the general review and supervision. Most assignments will be completed independently, subject to periodic review and approval.
Engineering (40%)
-Responsible for the planning, engineering, development, implementation and allocation of resources for network infrastructures and equipment. Assists in the execution of short-term planning activities for network development and implementation including transmission media, system architecture, and general technology guidelines.
-Executes moderately complex network engineering projects, test and evaluation programs, and engineering services including transmission and circuit design software. Responsible for the evaluation and determination of network systems needs, development, process analysis, design and re-engineering.
-Assists in the planning and engineering of moderately complex network product evaluations and develops and recommends technical solutions to management. Executes assessments of risk, cost and return on investment scenarios and impact as well as compatibility with existing hardware and software systems. Performs all functions of change management, configuration management, performance analysis, physical planning, national vendor management, inventory control, technical standards, procedures and product evaluations for network systems.
-Assists in the technical analysis and systems engineering of software, hardware and network systems for front-end processors, multiplexors, LAN/WAN communications, network nodes, switches, and various transmission systems. Assists in the development and implementation of methodologies for system analysis, acquisition, installation and consultation services in order to ensure compatibility of all software and hardware products at each network facility.
-Assists in the selection, integration and coordination of moderately complex networks for the organization. Responsible for the technical architecture and the necessary design, installation, and administration of hardware and software. Recommends acquisition of new hardware and software as well as network security and access procedures.
-Evaluates moderately complex network systems and recommends to management on resource requirements necessary to maintain and/or expand service levels. Assists in the development and implementation of network migration and architectural plans. Ensures that plans integrate effectively with other aspects of the technical infrastructure.
-Provides network modeling and simulation consulting to further clarify client/server networking needs as well as the engineering of router-based high-speed technology network transports and new advanced networking technologies to deliver the most efficient client/server application functionality and capacity performance. Develops, implements and utilizes bridges, routers, gateways, and transport media.
Support & Maintenance (40%)
Maintenance
-Performs systems monitoring and performance activities to ensure operation to standard and optimal efficiency and productivity of all system software and hardware components are constantly maintained.
-Develops fault diagnosis, isolation and resolution techniques that ensure optimal performance of the managed systems is constantly maintained.
-Facilitates needed hardware repair and procurement services with vendors as required.
-Responsible for effective deployment, installation, configuration, operation, maintenance and support of network systems hardware and software and related infrastructure.
-Installs and implements moderately complex network systems software and hardware, systems monitoring tools to support multiple business cases and requirements. Plans and performs upgrades of operating systems software; coordinates applications integration into the new environment.
-Adheres to departmental processes, including (but not limited to) change management, configuration management, incident management, problem management and disaster recovery planning as it pertains to supporting the network environment.
-Creates, documents, maintains and follows standard operating procedures.
Support
-Determines, diagnoses, isolates and resolves system resource and utilization problems to maximize scheduled system uptime and minimize unplanned outages.
Projects (10%)
-Responsible for network projects that range from medium to large in scope, risk and impact.
-Leads and facilitates strategic projects involved in evaluating and researching new and existing products, procedures and/or workflows needs associated with network systems for the Medical Center.
-Assists in the development and implementation of network policies, standards and procedures.
-Acts as a resource for direction, training and guidance for less experienced staff.
Other (10%)
-Reads and responds to (as appropriate) work-related e-mail.
-Attends and participates in team meetings and other scheduled group discussions not associated with a project or other specific initiative
-Provides status reports and performs timekeeping on a weekly basis

Minimum Qualifications
For Hire:
-Degree in Computer Science or related field desired, and 5 years of network experience, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
-Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills;
-Knowledge and practical application of routing protocols;
-Familiarity with security systems such as IDS/IPS;
-Familiarity with firewall technologies;
-Knowledge and use of 802.11;
-Knowledge and practical application of Layer 2-4 networking standards;
-Familiarity with ITIL best practice guidelines desired
-Proficiency in VMware vCenter, NSX and vSphere platforms
-Knowledge of Network Virtualization
-Proficiency with Network Function Virtualization (Loadbalnacers, switches, routers, firewalls)
• Required certifications within 3 months of hire: VMware VCP-NV and Cisco CCNA or equivalent
