Civil Engineer III
Contract Duration: Through November 7, 2025 (with strong potential for extension)

Department Summary:
The Substation Engineering Department is responsible for providing multi-disciplinary engineering design and leadership for high-voltage electric distribution projects associated with company-owned and operated electric substations throughout Michigan’s lower peninsula. The team specializes in both in-house and consultant-led designs for new substations, as well as repairs, upgrades, and modifications to existing facilities. Key areas of focus include structural and civil design, project development, spill compliance, permitting, code compliance, geotechnical analysis, standard development, procurement support, construction oversight, and overall project support. This position resides within the civil engineering group and will support various capital projects.
Role Summary:
The Senior Civil Engineer will play a pivotal role in multiple projects, with responsibilities including:
- Scope Identification: Determine and define the civil engineering design and construction requirements necessary for project completion.
- Collaboration: Contract and collaborate with engineering services to fulfill the project scope.
- Technical Leadership: Provide engineering review and act as the technical authority on civil design matters.
- Project Coordination: Work closely with the Project Manager and Project Engineer on procurement, contracting construction services, and other project-related tasks.
- Project Closeout: Oversee closeout activities, including the preparation of record drawings, test records, and related documentation.
As the civil subject matter expert and design authority representing Consumers Energy, the Senior Civil Engineer will be expected to provide regular updates to their supervisor on project status, risks, quality, cost, and schedule.
Site Conditions:
The Senior Civil Engineer must be prepared to work in a demanding industrial environment, which may include uneven terrain of undeveloped sites, active construction areas, and rocky surfaces. Safety is a priority, particularly when working in electric substations and around live electrical equipment.
Travel Requirements:
The Senior Civil Engineer will need to travel to construction sites approximately one day per week, with potential for up to five days a week. Site visits may include activities such as:
- Pre-engineering kick-offs
- Pre-construction reviews
- Construction milestones
- Technical problem-solving
- Quality inspections
- Regular site visits and red-line walkdowns
Qualifications:
- Proficient in civil/structural design with experience in site design, stormwater management, pre-engineered metal building design, foundation design, structural steel design, and environmental permitting (wetlands, soil erosion, culverts, etc.). Experience in multiple areas is preferred.
- Familiarity with coordinating and developing contract documents, specifically engineering drawings and technical specifications for consulting and construction services.
- Strong knowledge of Civil/Structural codes, including but not limited to: NESC, NEC, ASCE MOP 113, ASCE 7, IBC/MBC, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, and AWS D1.1.
- Proficient in software tools such as RISA, L-Pile, Civil3D, MicroStation, ProjectWise, and SAP.
