Position: Managing Editor and Projects Manager
Description: We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Managing Editor to oversee our editorial and digital content. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in journalism and editing, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for storytelling and agriculture. As the Managing Editor, you will be responsible for guiding the editorial vision, managing deadlines, and fostering a collaborative environment with the team, industry, and contributors.This position will report directly to the Executive Director of the association and Publisher of the magazine. Though this job can be remote and independent, this person must also be able to work with a small team where tasks ranging from projects to menial jobs are performed by all.
Responsibilities directly associated with the position are:
- Production of monthly magazine, including
- Soliciting and editing all content of monthly magazine
- Reporting on industry events, writing news and feature articles
- Scheduling monthly columns with regular contributors
- Layout and design; graphic design of ads as needed
- Submission of print-ready document to printer
- Assist Executive Director with association and magazine projects such as the annual conference, including development of promotional materials and programs.
- Develop and implement e-newsletter, social media, website management, and other digital content strategies for the association and the magazine.
- Manage web content for the Pecan South website and assist with other association websites.
- Write The Pecan Newsletter each week during the harvest season, which would include taking initiative to learn all aspects of the pecan industry.
- Work with the Office Manage to help manage and increase subscriptions for the magazine and newsletter.
- Other responsibilities and projects discussed with the Executive Director.
Other opportunities:
- The organization is hired on to do contract work with other associations. There are opportunities to help manage that work with extra compensation associated.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Degree in journalism or communications preferred; professional writing and editing skills essential
- Experience with publications
- Experience with publishing and graphic design software is essential including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Experience in digital content and websites.
- Background in agriculture (horticulture) an asset but not required
Professional Attributes:
Motivated, self-starter; creative; meets people well; organized; good communication skills; cooperative attitude. Must be able to travel frequently and independently to events, conferences, interviews with growers/pecan companies.
