Job Summary
This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President, Safety & Risk Management. The primary responsibilities of this position are to implement and ensure detailed Safety Programs are executed for the operation. This position works with and in conjunction with the Operations Team to ensure drivers’ training and in-service hours are maintained and up to date. This position will also assist in the management of special projects and tasks assigned by the Management team and or client that may be outside of the details listed below.
Key Responsibilities
Safety
- Ensure all workplace conditions are completely safe at all times and that a safety-first mentality is enforced throughout all levels of the operation.
- Develop and implement safety procedures and policies to ensure the customer, drivers, all staff and the general public are able to operate in a safe environment at all times.
- Assist with the hiring of new drivers to ensure that they fully understand and execute safe practices.
- Ensure operation is 100% compliant at all times with all Local, State and Federal regulations. Including staying current with State and Federal regulations.
- Handle all insurance claims reporting and develop plans for claims reductions.
- Manage Samsara program onboard all vehicles, including weekly coaching sessions with drivers.
- Conduct and track ride along with drivers, spot checks and trail checks on a monthly basis.
- Formulate and oversee a Safety Committee to meet regularly on improvements to the company's safety program.
- Revise, implement, and train all managers and supervisors on the Injury Illness Prevention Plan.
- Create curriculum and conduct monthly Safety Meetings for drivers.
- Create relevant and timely materials for weekly and quarterly meetings, integrating multiple media resources when appropriate.
- Create Daily Safety Messages for drivers. Accident frequency – determine baseline accident rate, maintain statistics for accidents per 100,000 miles, including stats per accident type.
- Accident trends - creates trend analysis for type of accident, time of day, weather conditions, driving environment, day of week, etc.
- Maintain CHP driver’s book ensuring all documentation is up to date. This includes monthly audits. Notify Drivers of upcoming Medical Certificate expirations.
- Review Electronic Driver Logs for violations and mistakes and informing drivers of corrections.
- Follow up on any reported safety concerns from driver and staff in a timely manner
Training
- Work alongside Operations Team, Management, and client Transportation teams to continuously develop and upgrade all training programs.
- Execute a fully encompassing training program that covers all aspects of a driver's responsibilities on an ongoing basis.
- Conduct training programs on, but not limited to safe driving techniques, defensive driving, ADA training and wheelchair assistance, accident prevention, accident scene and Critical Incident Training.
- Develop potential employee Drive Test that meets California DMV Driver Performance Evaluation criteria.
- Ensure all employee files are updated and accurate in all training programs completed.
- Create Training schedule for all new drivers.
- Train new drivers on preferred routing. Be fluent in SMFTA regulations and routing.
Education/Experience/Requirements:
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must provide exceptional customer service to our clients and drivers.
- Must be familiar with and/or possess intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office and other computer software.
- Must be able to work various shifts (day, evening, nights, weekends) as required.
- The job requires flexibility because assignments may be undertaken with little or no notice outside of normal work hours.
- Prior experience for leading, managing and supervising a team (required).
- Must maintain a clean driving record.
- Must have active CDL with passenger endorsement (airbrake endorsement required).
- Must have 5 years’ bus operations experience and have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in Transportation Safety Management or combination of driving and safety experience.
- Requires experience with FMCSA regulations as prescribed by the US Department of Transportation.
