TITLE: Safety Services Specialist

This is not a remote-working position, it is in office only.
Reports to: Vice President of Safety Services
Occupational Summary:
Support DAN’s safety programs in recreational scuba diving including risk mitigation, recompression chamber safety, training and education.Provide support to education, outreach and safety development programs, including handling risk mitigation, training and chamber enquiries.Monitor existing and new education programs including performing quality control, updates and additions.Develop new risk mitigation and recompression chamber training modules. Engage with dive professionals and businesses, technical and training organizations, and recompression facilities.A suitable candidate should be able to expand the department’s ability to work with a broad range of dive industry stake-holders and hence ensure the long-term sustainability of this dive safety-based function.Job-based travel to both domestic and international locations is part of the longer-term development of this position, once a degree of proficiency in the position has been attained. This does not form a significant part of the position.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities to include the following, based on the candidates experience and abilities:
- Diving accident prevention and preparedness programs including risk mitigation of dive operations.
- Risk assessment, technical and safety advice for diver recompression treatment facilities.
- Coordination and support on an international basis of all DAN safety related initiatives and programs.
- Responding to information and related communications on safety activities, including training system, risk mitigation and operational diving related queries.
- Generating and reporting on surveys.
- Production of written articles relating to safety in the diving industry.
- Compiling newsletters and safety tools.
- Presentation of safety topics on public platforms.
- Teaching students in the range of safety-services programs.
- Assisting in recompression chamber training programs.
- Updating databases of service providers, training instructors, dive safety officers and recompression chambers through electronic and direct communication.
- Represent Divers Alert Network including presentations at various events as assigned.
- Other tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Education/Training
- Appropriate Bachelor’s degree (or higher) and preferably with recognized training in least some of the following:
- Professional scuba diving rating required, Dive Instructor or Dive Master or Instructor Trainer
- Hyperbaric facility safety officer, operator or technician
- DAN First Aid Instructor or appropriate equivalent
- Dive safety officer, or
- Occupational health and safety officer
Experience:
- Background to include at least some of the following:
- Experience in the operation of medical, recompression and/or commercial diving hyperbaric facilities
- Field experience in first aid
- Scuba diving or related first aid training
- Experience in, or exposure to diving safety functions, including related non-diving activities
- Experience in underwater activities other than recreational diving
- Authored published articles in diving and/or hyperbaric fields
- Presentations in any of the above or related topics
- Design, development and/or implementation of training programs
- Minimum 3 years in the recreational diving industry or in the hyperbaric medical field
- Minimum 3 years teaching experience
- Minimum 5 years of full-time employment
