The only time physicians are called to actually attend a delivery/C-section is by OB request (usually for prematurity or other OB emergency that will likely render very depressed newborn). These occasions are very rare, about once per year, but the potential is always there.
The likelihood of being called AFTER delivery to urgently assess/ stabilize/transfer (most commonly for acute respiratory distress) is maybe once a week. Occasionally more. There are plenty of weeks though that there are no urgent assessments or transfers. Every week is different. Our OBs do a pretty good job of trying to stick to routine/low risk patients.
Also, candidate may be interested to know that having 3-4 babies on the unit is typical. Rounding on 6+ babies would be 'high census.' I think we are still averaging about 25-30 deliveries per month give or take.
