Role Summary
The Fabrication General Manager monitors production output, supervises staff, and ensures that products meet customer specifications and quality expectations. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of the fab and fencing business to include things listed as well as helping drive sales, engineering and overall business performance with P&L ownership. Also managing inventory with inventory manager, increasing the efficiency of operations and assisting scheduling production. This role ensures production stays on schedule and within budget. The general manager should understand and enforce safety, quality control, and production expectations. Other duties involve developing or improving the training program, hiring new employees, and overseeing day-to-day operations
Key Responsibilities
Preparation of quotes
Support the quoting process by providing inputs for labor, material and equipment needed to complete a project.
Planning
Working with the Division VP, develop and maintain planning tools that ensure the fabrication operation is staffed with sufficient skilled resources. Prioritize work effort to ensure the production schedule is met. Participate in long range planning to forecast project load and ensure there are sufficient resources to meet demand
Execution & Control of Activities
Oversees production of all areas of the fabrication shop (Welding, Automation, Powder Coating and Assembly) on a continual basis to ensure the production schedule is met while optimizing resources.
Financial & Commercial Management
Effectively manage the hours of the fabrication team members to ensure there is maximum utilization of resources. Complete project in the allocated time and to the projected total cost.
Team Leadership & People Management
Leadership and performance management of all employees on the shop floor, including team motivation and engagement, on-the-job training & development coaching, and creation of staffing schedules.
Communication
Ongoing communication with the fabrication team regarding production schedules, upcoming projects, and scheduling. Engagement with the customer regarding production schedule, issue resolution, and quality.
Health, Safety & Environment Management
Accountable for the effective implementation of Health Safety & Environmental policies and processes in line with NPSG requirements for NPSG employees. This includes: Daily safety briefings to the fabrication team, safety assessments on all activities within the building, and partnership with NPSG H&S to ensure all safety requirements are met.
Metric Driven Reporting
Monitor and report on personnel utilization, waste and scrap reduction, inventory levels, and safety performance.
Experience & Skills Required
Work experience
Minimum of 5 years' experience leading a fabrication team of 20-30 people. Experience working with Lean 6 Sigma Methods or other process improvement strategy preferred
Educational Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance or equivalent (minimum). Advanced degree preferred
Stakeholder management & communication skills
Ability to work with and communicate to customer, engineering and sales team. Good written and verbal communication skills.
Financial & numerical knowledge & skills
Experience in managing labor costs, material costs and equipment costs. Has experience managing a complete P&L and balance sheet.
Other technical knowledge & qualifications
Experience with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Inventory Tracking Software preferred
Knowledge of materials & tools
Welding, Fiber laser, CNC Machines, Break press, Robotic welding, Powder Coating, and/or Assembly
Leadership & people management skills & experience
Has led and motivated teams in a fabrication environment. Able to provide timely follow up and attention to employee issues and complaints/concerns escalating those as appropriate to HR. Has extensive background in implementing lean team based manufacturing approaches and processes.
Organizational skills
Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and deliverables to fixed deadlines.
Health, Safety & Environment knowledge & experience
Good knowledge of, and experience in the application of, health & safety requirements for fabrication activities.
Must complete all mandatory HSE training identified for this position.
Software skills
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office: Excel, Word and Outlook, Microsoft Project knowledge as user, MIETrak or similar Manufacturing ERP, Eviewer, AutoCAD Viewer and AutoCAD basic skills.
Training will be required in use of company & client specific software: Workday, Replicon, Voktrack, etc
Language skills
Fluent spoken and written English. Working knowledge of Spanish is preferred.
Essential Physical Attributes
Needs to be physically fit, able to walk long distances every day on the shop floor.
Able to carry weights, lift and move parts and tools requiring bending and carrying, within safe limits
