Summary
Based in Romulus, MI, the North America Technical Manager serves as the metallurgy expert for the AGI division. This individual performs and supports metallurgical investigations, failure analyses, and development testing, frequently recommending mitigation actions for part quality issues. They will also guide process development for ferrous and non-ferrous metal parts and ensure process cycles are robust and optimized. Customer interactions are often required, including writing and presenting professional reports and technical briefs.
Essential Job Functions (Duties and Responsibilities): The primary duties consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
Quality Assurance Support.
- Interpret industry standards (example: AIAG, SAE, ASTM, AMS, CQI-9).
- Interpret customer prints and specifications.
- Support site quality engineers to develop robust inspection plans and methods.
- Support sites by engaging customer engineering and metallurgy contacts as needed to clarify, resolve, discuss and ideate on pertinent topics.
Continuous Improvement.
- Work with site metallurgists and quality engineers to drive cycle optimizations, continually reduce product and process variations and deliver improvements for cost and quality.
Sales & Commercial Management Support.
- Support RFQ responses.
- Initial process flow brainstorming and heat treat cycle and auxiliary process cycle estimates (example washing, shot peening/blasting, etc.).
- Support sales team with technical discussions and presentations with customers for new programs / new business.
Customer Project Launch Support.
- Prescribe process details (load size, sequence, recipes and tolerances) to ensure part specifications are met, repeatably.
- Manage process development from start to production handover.
Metallurgical Lab Work & Management.- Perform metallurgical evaluation, mechanical and chemical testing of parts, including:
- Brinell, Rockwell and micro-hardness testing.
- Metallographic sample preparation and in-depth microstructure evaluation.
- Material chemistry determination (spectroscopy).
- Macro and micro photography.
- Tensile and compression testing.
- Failure and Fracture analysis.
- Maintain the highest level of compliance to standards and best practices to ensure integrity and thoroughness of investigations, analyses and testing work done.
- Author high quality technical reports, presentations and briefs on metallurgical and failure analyses work done, as needed.
- Procure and maintain lab equipment and supplies for the division’s Metlab.
- Ensure Metlab is always neat, clean and well-organized – high standards of housekeeping.
Knowledge Base, Mentoring, and Continuing Education.
- Keep abreast of thermal processing and coatings technologies for adoption as needed.
- Take continuing education courses as needed to maintain knowledge base.
- Participate in technical and metallurgical mentorship of newly hired and aspiring associates.
Other Functions & Responsibilities.
- As an important member of the Technical Services Organization (TSO) management team, this individual will participate in staff meetings, developing budgets and roadmaps.

- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with team members, internal/external customers.

- Bachelor of Science degree (minimum) in metallurgy, materials science or chemistry.
- Ten years of experience and practical knowledge of thermal processing of irons and steels. Some exposure to non-ferrous materials such as aluminum and titanium is desirable.
- Must have deep knowledge in product and process metallurgy with breadth of experience across different types of products, thermal processes and processing equipment.
- Proficient in failure analyses, fractography, mechanical and metallurgical testing of metals. Hands-on experience working in a metallurgy and materials testing laboratory.
- Must be knowledgeable in automotive, commercial and general industrial specifications, standards and best practices as it relates to thermal processing and materials testing.
- Must be able to effectively read and interpret technical drawings, be precise and detail oriented.
- Must have high work ethics and be generally self-disciplined and self-driven.
- Able to manage changing priorities, accept constructive criticism and continually improve to ensure success in the role.
- Must show fluent, effective communication (reading, writing and speaking) in English.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; must have excellent multi-tasking skills and ability to prioritize.
- Actively participate in team meetings to work on problem solving and continuous improvement of the organization.
- Must have basic maintenance or industrial tools.
Physical & Mental Demands: The following physical and mental demands consist of, but are not limited to the following:
- Be able to travel to sites as needed (~25%).
- Must be able to work in a sitting/standing position for extended periods of time in an office/industrial environment or on a plane/car.
- Ability to bend, pull, stoop and reach to perform functions.
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
- May be exposed to heat, fumes, noise, and humidity, etc.
- Must have the cognitive and mental capacity to perform essential job functions.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
