Job Summary:
With oversight of approximately 40 ready-mix concrete plants stretching from Washington DC to Myrtle Beach, spanning 6 distinct markets, the Material Director’s primary responsibility is to continuously improve the Business Unit’s ready-mix concrete quality assurance and quality control programming.
This is a customer-centric role requiring high levels of business acumen along with deep technical knowledge of the ready-mix concrete industry.
Specific job responsibilities include:
- Design concrete mixtures to ensure customer needs and specification requirements are met with the optimal combination of materials, cost, and performance
- Create submittals, attend pre-pour meetings, manage plant and jobsite product performance, and provide troubleshooting expertise
- Develop, manage, and communicate key performance indicators
- Support the evaluation and implementation of new technologies, new materials, and continuous improvement programs to target zero defects and zero waste
- Develop, implement, and maintain quality control plans and manage certifications for labs and plants in accordance with all regulatory requirements
- Maintain all appropriate certifications for plants and department personnel
- Ensure consistency throughout the Business Unit in mix design, submittal and performance monitoring procedures, ensuring cost and performance are in balance
- Sample, test, and monitor raw materials for compliance of applicable specifications
- Carry out all pertinent ASTM, ACI, and DOT testing procedures and evaluations, monitor test data and plant records for specification compliance in commercial and DOT sectors
- Detect, investigate, and report any deviations to the specifications of the test results for all products; makes recommendations based on findings and implements corrective actions
- Give feedback on the opportunities of product development presented by BU Marketing & Sales and contribute to the definition of new product specifications
- Investigate, analyze, and recommend solutions to resolve customer complaints and implement solutions to prevent recurrence
- Review concrete mixes based on project plans and make recommendations for material selection and utilization rates based on design objectives
- Maintain up to date knowledge of technical developments, industry trends, and environmental regulations related to company products through technical literature and membership in key associations
- Develop and lead quality control and assurance programs, implement training for both internal and external customers; evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives
- Create and maintain effective relationships with commercial laboratories, architects, engineers, regulating agencies, academia, and large accounts to lead the industry in product utilization and development of sustainable industry regulations
- Supervise Quality personnel to meet desired requirements, continuously improve operations, and promote personal development
- Perform field work and lab testing as needed to support the Business Unit
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in a related field
- 8+ years of experience leading regional quality operations within ready-mix concrete
- PE license or related certifications
- ACI, NRMCA, VDOT and/or NCDOT certification or must be able to obtain certification
- Knowledge of the technical process for cement and concrete; ready mix manufacturing design, optimization, processes, and equipment, including familiarity with industry standards and specifications and engineering principles
- Must possess analytical ability and understanding of material theory involved in solving complex problems, with strong math and statistical analysis and application (six sigma training preferred)
- Proficiency in commonly used computer software (MS Office); familiarity with industry software (SAP)
- Excellent communication skills – listening, oral, written, and presentation
- Ability to read and interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and local, state, and federal specifications and standards
