Job Overview:
The Electrical Crane Engineer will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing the electrical systems of port cranes, including Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, and Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in electrical engineering and automation systems, with experience in port operations or a similar heavy-industrial environment. This role requires a hands-on professional who can ensure operational efficiency, safety, and compliance with industry standards.
Responsibilities
Electrical Maintenance & Repair:
- Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on electrical systems for STS, RTG, and RMG cranes, focusing on reliability and minimizing downtime.
- Diagnose and resolve electrical faults, including issues with control panels, PLCs, drives, motors, and other critical crane components.
- Repair and replace faulty wiring, cables, relays, and other electrical components as necessary.
Inspection & Troubleshooting:
- Conduct regular inspections to assess the condition of crane electrical systems and ensure they meet regulatory and safety standards.
- Utilize diagnostic tools and software to identify and address faults in control systems, automation components, and power distribution.
- Analise recurring issues and implement measures to prevent future breakdowns.
System Upgrades & Modifications:
- Recommend and implement electrical system upgrades, modifications, or retrofits to improve crane performance, safety, and energy efficiency.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to design and test new electrical solutions or improve existing setups, ensuring minimal disruption to port operations.
- Participate in commissioning of new cranes or upgraded systems, ensuring smooth integration with existing equipment.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure all electrical work complies with local and international safety regulations, port authority standards, and company protocols.
- Adhere to lockout/tagout procedures and other safety guidelines when performing repairs or maintenance.
- Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and upgrades to facilitate audits and ensure accountability.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare detailed service and maintenance reports after each task, outlining work completed, findings, and recommendations.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation on electrical system configurations, control diagrams, and modifications made.
Training & Support:
- Provide technical training and guidance to junior staff and operators on the safe and effective use of crane systems.
- Act as a point of contact for electrical troubleshooting and assist in developing standard operating procedures.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with specific crane brands/models and associated control systems.
- Experience in high-voltage electrical systems and motor control.
- Knowledge of hydraulic and mechanical systems is an advantage.
Working Conditions:
- Requires work in outdoor and at-height conditions, with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- May involve extended hours, night shifts, and on-call availability in case of emergencies.
Qualifications
- Minimum of an NVQ Level 3 or Apprenticeship in some form of engineering- preferably degree qualified.
- Proven experience working with port cranes.
- Cranes knowledge of either electrical, hydraulic or mechanical equipment.
- Valid UK drivers license
