A Day in the Life of a Lifeguard
As a YMCA Lifeguard, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety of swimmers by providing constant pool surveillance, responding to emergencies, and enforcing water safety rules. You will also engage with YMCA members, contributing to a welcoming and safe environment. This role is essential to water safety and helps the YMCA meet its goal of providing healthy and safe recreational activities for the community.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas
- Respond immediately to swimming emergencies and perform rescues when necessary
- Enforce all pool safety rules and policies
- Perform pool maintenance tasks like equipment checks and chemical testing
- Participate in regular lifeguard in-service training and meetings
- Maintain clear, accurate records of pool activity and any incidents
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 16
- Lifeguard certification or willing to be certified (Y Lifeguarding, American Red Cross, Ellis Associates, or equivalent)
- Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
- Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness for emergency response
- Availability for shifts to match the facility's operating hours of 5:15am - 8:45pm (Part-time work)
- Strong sense of responsibility, with the ability to anticipate and react swiftly to potential issues in the pool area
