Head of Sports Performance/Strength and Conditioning Coach will be responsible for developing and overseeing performance training programs that optimize athletic performance, strength, conditioning, and injury prevention. This position will primarily serve soccer athletes at the youth and adult levels, but will also work with the general population. The coach will be expected to work with individuals, small groups, and teams, with the ability to transition injured athletes back to full performance training. This role requires collaboration with physical therapists, head coaches, and other strength and conditioning staff members to ensure a holistic approach to athlete development.
Key Responsibilities, Skills and Competencies:
- Program Development & Coaching:
- Strong knowledge of strength training principles, periodization, and program design.
- Develop and implement strength and conditioning programs for individuals, small groups, and team sessions.
- Tailor programs to meet the needs of both youth and adult soccer players, with a strong emphasis on performance enhancement and injury prevention.
- Lead training sessions that improve mobility, strength, power, speed, agility, endurance, and overall athletic performance.
- Injury Prevention & Rehab Support:
- Comfort with injury prevention protocols and rehabilitation strategies.
- Implementing effective injury prevention strategies to reduce the risk of injury across all clients.
- Experience working with physical therapists and athletic trainers to assist with injury rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols, helping athletes transition back to training and competition safely.
- Monitor the progress of injured athletes, adjusting their training loads and intensity as necessary.
- Recovery Strategies & Nutrition:
- Knowledge of recovery strategies, including rest, active recovery, and mobility exercises.
- Basic understanding of sports nutrition and the ability to provide guidance on fueling for optimal performance and recovery.
- Performance Monitoring & Data Analysis:
- Track and analyze athlete performance using various metrics and technologies, including force plates, dynamometers, RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion), and movement screens.
- Regularly assess athletes’ progress and make adjustments to training programs based on performance data to optimize results.
- Use performance data to guide decisions on training loads, recovery strategies, and athlete development.
- Communication, Collaboration & Team Leadership:
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex training concepts clearly to clients, athletes, coaches, and staff.
- Work in close collaboration with physical therapists, athletic trainers, head coaches, and other performance staff to create comprehensive and integrated training programs.
- Mentor and lead interns and other staff members, fostering a positive, team-oriented environment.
- Collaborate with coaches and other professionals in a multidisciplinary team to ensure training programs align with team goals, tactical needs, and adjust training protocols accordingly.
- Facility Management & Administrative Tasks:
- Oversee the maintenance, organization, and up-keep of the strength and conditioning facility to ensure it is well-equipped and safe for use.
- Manage training schedules, ensuring efficient use of facility time and resources.
- Ensure that all training sessions are documented and that program progress is regularly updated.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Science, or a related field.
- Master's degree preferred, but not required.
- Certifications:
- Preferred: NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or equivalent.
- Additional certifications in strength coaching, sports performance, or injury prevention are a plus.
- CPR/AED certification required.
- Experience:
- Preferred: At least 3 years of experience in strength and conditioning, with a proven ability to design and implement programs for soccer athletes at the youth and adult levels.
- Experience working with injured athletes and in rehabilitation settings is highly desirable.
- Experience with performance monitoring tools (force plates, dynamometers, RPE, movement screenings) is a plus.
Work Environment:
- Training Facilities:
- The coach will primarily work in the gym and will have access to a soccer field for sport-specific training.
- The position requires flexibility to transition between the gym, field, and rehabilitation settings, depending on the needs of clients.
- Athlete Demographics:
- The coach will work with a wide range of clients, including the general population, individual athletes, soccer teams at the youth and adult levels, and injured athletes transitioning back into performance training.
- Collaboration:
- This role requires close collaboration with physical therapists, athletic trainers, head coaches, and other strength and conditioning staff members to ensure athletes receive comprehensive care and training.
- Schedule:
- The position is 30 hours per week with benefits. The role requires flexibility with evening, weekend, and potential off-site hours for training sessions, events, or camps.
