NCE is excited to have a seasoned Senior Biologist join our team in northern California. For this position, the primary work location will be associated with one of NCE’s northern California offices in Point Richmond, Oakland, or Sacramento. In this role, you will engage on a variety of resource, infrastructure, transportation, environmental, and restoration projects with public (primarily local and state agencies) and private clients to conduct field surveys, prepare technical reports, make resource recommendations, prepare permit applications, and guide regulatory compliance. You will be a “seller/doer” who can manage projects, perform technical work, and engage with senior colleagues and NCE’s marketing team to pursue and secure new biological focused business.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and conduct field biological surveys, habitat mapping, pre-construction surveys, and construction monitoring
- Assess habitats and resources to provide management and protection recommendations
- Analyze project impacts and identify avoidance and mitigation measures
- Prepare technical studies, biological resource assessments, and resource permit applications
- Negotiate and communicate with regulatory agencies on behalf of clients and projects
- Provide quality control for biological and regulatory permitting deliverables
- Manage projects and clients
- Mentor and inspire junior biologists
- Work collaboratively with senior technical and business development staff to identify and secure new biological and regulatory compliance related work
- Represent NCE at northern California events and conferences, and with environmental or biological focused professional organizations
- Prepare proposals, participate in interviews, and develop scope and fee for biological related work
Qualifications (Must Have):
- Bachelor’s Degree in biology, botany, ecology, natural resource science, environmental science, or related field
- Minimum of 10 years of professional work experience
- Experience and ability to conduct field surveys and prepare biological reports for habitats and special status species in northern California
- Demonstrated experience preparing and obtaining permits from natural resource regulatory agencies (e.g., US Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Regional Water Quality Control Boards, California Coastal Commission, etc.)
- Ability to manage and deliver multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Qualifications (Nice to Have):
- Master’s degree in biology, botany, ecology, natural resource science, environmental science, or related field
- Experience working for a consulting practice
- Experience supervising biologists, resource specialists, or field technicians
- Possess (or ability to obtain) scientific collecting or handling permits, 10(a)(1)(A) permit, or have received specialized training for northern California special status species
- Experience with environmental documentation for California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) or National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance
- Experience with business development and preparing comprehensive proposals
Working Conditions: The position will be a mix of office and field work. Includes conducting field surveys in remote locations with rough terrain.
Salary range: $120,000 to $160,000 annually, DOE and primary work location.
