Legal Counsel (In-House) – Litigated/Complex Claims
The primary focus of this position is to assist the General Counsel with a broad range of legal projects, with a primary focus on managing outside defense counsel and litigated claims files and otherwise serving as a legal resource for claims personnel on litigation and coverage-related matters. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as a legal resource for adjusters handling complex bodily injury claims, including litigated claims
- Work with outside counsel retained to represent insureds in connection with pre- and post-litigation strategies and activities
- Work with coverage counsel retained to advise the Company or its affiliates on a broad range of coverage-related issues
- Work with outside counsel on formulating litigation strategies for bad faith, class action, and various other types of litigation
- Assist with identifying a diverse bench of outside counsel in jurisdictions across the United States
- Assist with training adjusters with respect to the handling of claims, particularly BI and litigated claims
- Assist the General Counsel with the management of litigation involving the Company and its affiliates
- Assist in trial preparation and preparing company witnesses for depositions and other testimony
- Attend trials and provide trial reports to the General Counsel and other relevant business units
- Provide legal advice to appropriate representatives of the Company and its affiliates
- Analyze legal problems and interpret laws and regulations
- Analyze legal matters and/or litigation resolution in creative ways
- Serve as a resource for the organization on compliance and other claim-related issues
- Collaborating with business units to manage legal risk
Qualifications:
- Law Degree from an ABA accredited law school and excellent academic credentials
- Active law license to practice law in at least on state and a member in good standing of the bar
- Attorney with 5+ years of litigation experience
- Advanced knowledge of legal principles and practices related to litigation
- Leadership and management skills
- Experience with personal injury litigation or insurance coverage strongly preferred
- Proactive mindset required
- Commitment to providing quality legal advice, learning agility (included demonstrated willingness to develop expertise in new subject matters), and a history of enthusiastic participation in a team environment
Additional Details:
- Employees are not permitted to handle any outside legal business
- Newly hired employees must cease all outside practice and all suit involvement before joining
- Travel may be required via commercial transportation or driving to job related activities
- May work irregular hours due to workload and nature of work
- Salary Range – Salary $150,000 or higher depending on experience plus up to 20% discretionary performance bonus
