Job Overview:
The Senior Electrical Engineer will help lead the internal PV & Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) electrical engineering process for assigned projects for a large Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) firm. This position includes oversight of electrical design and studies, consideration of field construction and installation means & methods in chosen design decisions, design development & cost optimization, design of DC, MVAC, and LVAC Auxiliary collection systems, and mentorship of other junior team members.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for developing preliminary and detailed designs based on engineering principles for PV and BESS projects.
- Develop and improve electrical engineering calculation tools to come up with cable, conduit, OCPD, and electrical equipment ratings based on project requirements.
- Work with Estimating team to provide support with design concepts and design optimization of the BOM and SOV.
- Work with CAD designers to guide them through well designed site layouts and single line diagrams.
- Develop and maintain the database for different equipment involved in PV and BESS designs and update the database as new versions are received.
- Develop construction details and Bill of Material for various construction work packages for assigned projects.
- Review Utility interconnection documents like Facility studies, Interconnection Agreements, or Power Purchase Agreements and confirm the project design meets the requirements of those agreements.
- Provide support and design inputs to the PV Performance group to ensure they can develop accurate production models for RFP and contracted projects.
- Apply innovative engineering principles for cost optimization of utility scale PV and BESS projects, develop design matrices for comparison, and maintain the same for future reference.
- Provide support to Procurement team and Project Engineers regarding any questions concerning product compatibility, BOM qtys, reasons for design decisions and assumptions used in preliminary design and required equipment ratings for assigned projects.
- Attend mandatory training sessions on new products, installation methodologies, and safety protocols.
- Develop expertise with modules, racking, inverters, batteries, DC-DC converters, BMS and EMS technologies, MV Switchgear and Transformers, and other material drivers associated with a proper design of utility scale PV & BESS projects.
- Review and provide comments on EOR drawings and studies to ensure project cost is controlled through comparison to internal preliminary design.
- Provide mentorship for other Electrical Engineers, Design Leads, Project Engineers, and CAD Designers.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college.
- 3 years minimum work experience in Solar PV Design or Solar construction industry.
- 8+ years’ experience with Electrical Engineering and/or work related to Solar PV or any other Renewable Energy Technology.
- Professional experience with Utility PV Contract negotiation in EPC setting.
- Professional Engineering License Preferred.
PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Must be proficient in AutoCAD, ETAP, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Other electrical engineering simulation software (SAM, Cymcap, DIgSILENT, and WinIGS) experience a plus.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to read and understand drawings, SLDs, and specifications.
- Ability to understand manufacturer’s design parameters, application limitations, and installation guidelines.
- Familiar with creating PV site plans and single line drawings (DC and AC systems).
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through on assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
- Able to work in a fast-moving environment while maintaining a positive attitude in stressful situations.
- High level of organizational skills and professionalism.
