Position Overview:
We are looking for a HVDC Specialist with a strong background in leading complex HVDC projects, offering technical leadership and supporting the full lifecycle of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning. This is a 12 month initial contract with extensions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Leadership: Provide subject matter expertise on HVDC systems and configurations, including VSC, Symmetrical, Monopole, Bipole, and STATCOM technologies.
- Engineering Management: Oversee end-to-end engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, including advanced tests such as hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), factory acceptance testing (FAT), and on-site commissioning.
- Innovation & Development: Conduct detailed research on HVDC systems, exploring new control methods and innovative technologies to improve efficiency and reliability.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the HVDC expert in technical discussions, workshops, and meetings, representing the project with both internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the principal technical expert on HVDC configurations, including VSC, Monopole, Bipole, STATCOM, and other configurations.
- Manage engineering and commissioning tasks across HVDC protection, control, primary layout, and physical applications, ensuring compliance through tests such as hardware-in-the-loop, FAT, and real-time simulator evaluations.
- Perform complex engineering calculations for detailed HVDC designs and review technical documentation from OEMs and owner’s engineers.
- Lead the development of project-specific technical requirements for HVDC systems and liaise with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to implement these specifications.
- Review, document, and approve engineering, procurement, and construction deliverables from OEMs or consultants.
- Facilitate technical workshops and discussions with internal and external stakeholders, providing expert guidance on HVDC aspects relevant to both transmission and offshore wind farm scopes.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience: At least 15 years in HVDC and FACTS project execution. A Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering is highly desirable. Professional Engineer licensure is an asset.
- Technical Expertise: Strong skills in electromagnetic transient analysis software, Mathcad, MATLAB, Aspen/CAPE, and PSS®E/PSLF. Experience transitioning HVDC projects from feasibility and studies to detailed engineering and commissioning.
- Specialized Knowledge: Deep knowledge of HVDC converter technologies (VSC, LCC), FACTS technologies (e.g., STATCOM, SVC), and integration of inverter-based resources.
- Project Management: Proven background in project oversight, particularly in power system studies and the design and commissioning of high-voltage transmission systems.
