Based in San Francisco, Voice AI is offering a unique opportunity for a Founding Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to take ownership of the backend platform and play a key role in defining the future of the product.
Role Overview and Responsibilities
As Voice AI’s Founding Senior Software Engineer (Backend), you’ll own features end-to-end, from initial customer requests through to deployment, all while working within a modular, API-first architecture. Your work will include meeting real-time, low-latency constraints and collaborating closely with the founding team. Beyond building, you’ll also play a key role in shaping Voice AI’s engineering culture.
Your core responsibilities:
- End-to-End Feature Ownership: Take features from idea to deployment, using an API-first, modular approach.
- Real-Time System Design: Build with a focus on speed and reliability within real-time, low-latency environments.
- Culture Building: Set the standard for how we work together and help create a collaborative engineering culture.
Key milestones
Deliver Key Features and Projects:
- First 7 days: Ship a pre-scoped feature.
- First 30 days: Ship a feature independently.
Ship Optimizations and Refactors:
- First 14 days: Ship a scoped optimization or refactor, e.g., improve latency in a speech-to-speech component.
- First 30 days: Deliver an independent optimization or refactor, such as refining a tool-calling mechanism to improve determinism.
Customer Interaction:
- Within 14 days, handle a support request and deliver a customer-requested fix.
- Proactively pick up customer feedback, investigate, and solve within 14 days.
Build Delightful Experiences:
- Unprompted, ship something to delight a customer within the first 30 days, such as enhancing a call analytics endpoint.
Core Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in Full Stack or Backend Software Engineering.
- 2+ years of experience designing and deploying features you’ve built yourself.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working in a fast-paced company (<100 employees).
- Strong proficiency with the React and Typescript frontend stack.
- Previous experience in a Founding, Senior, Staff, or Principal Engineer role.
- Willingness to work in-office with the team 5 days/week in San Francisco.
