DUTIES:

Incumbent serves as Community Center Director and is responsible for supervising and directing Geater Center operations.

DUTIES AND SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:

Supervises and directs Geater Center personnel, including scheduling and making work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction, evaluating performance, maintaining discipline, and enforcing Center policies and procedures. Occasionally conducts leadership development programs for assigned personnel.

Maintains inventory of office and recreation supplies, initiating/authorizing/submitting requisitions for items as needed. Notifies department Superintendent of needed building repairs, and submits recommendations for building improvements as appropriate.

Oversees maintenance of various Center records as required, such as activity schedules, activity participation/attendance, fee receipts, and accidents/injuries. Compiles and submits related reports as required.

Assists supervisor and other department personnel in developing and implementing policies for the Center building and grounds rental, including determining schedules, assigning appropriate personnel, and overseeing the collection and receipting of fees.

Participates in developing diversified Center programs and activities according to department mission and programming guidelines, encouraging and promoting cross-cultural programs among all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and ability levels. Co-sponsors programs with related recreational agencies, determines appropriate fees, and contracts special class instructors as appropriate.

Periodically meets with supervisor and other department personnel, related agencies, and the public to identify community recreation needs and evaluate effectiveness of Center programs in meeting identified needs.

Promotes Center activities by working with supervisor and other department personnel in describing programs in brochures and other marketing efforts, and occasionally in preparing Center promotional materials and making public speaking presentations.

Attends department and Park Board meetings as required, reporting Center activities and responding to inquiries.

Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in recreation by occasionally attending related workshops as authorized.

Periodically makes recommendations to department Superintendent regarding local, state, and federal grant sources and prepares applications as authorized.

Prepares and submits to department Superintendent the annual Center budget, including reviewing current year expenditures and projecting next year’s costs.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Baccalaureate Degree in parks and recreation or related area preferred. Possession of first aid certification preferred.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation program management and department and Center policies and procedures, and ability to coordinate appropriate Center programs to meet identified community recreation needs.

Working knowledge of individual and team sports and experience in organizing sports events and leagues.

Ability to supervise and direct Center personnel, including scheduling and making work assignments, providing training and corrective instruction, evaluating performance, maintaining discipline, and enforcing the Center policies and procedures.

Working knowledge of budget administration, and ability to prepare the Center budget, and ensure cost-effective operations and maintenance of related records.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare reports, grant applications, and other required documents. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a computer, printer, fax, calculator, and telephone.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other department personnel, Park Board, related recreation agencies, program participants and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision.

Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend, and/or evening hours and occasionally travel out of town for workshops, sometimes, overnight.

Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.

II. SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

Incumbent performs according to well-defined policies and procedures, exercising independent judgment in supervising personnel, managing and coordinating Geater Center operations, and ensuring adherence to City, department, and Center policies. Incumbent makes a substantial contribution to department mission of meeting identified community recreation needs, discussing unusual or unprecedented situations with supervisor as required. Incumbent’s work is primarily reviewed for soundness of judgment and compliance with City and department policies.

III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE OF WORK OPERATIONS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other department personnel, Park Board, related recreation agencies, program participants, and the public for purposes of exchanging information, explaining or interpreting policies, promoting, planning and coordinating programs and activities, and supervising and directing assigned personnel and small-to-large groups of program participants.

Incumbent reports directly to the Superintendent of Recreation and reports to department Superintendent regarding budget issues and building repairs and improvements.

IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties in a recreational facility involving standing or walking for long periods, hearing sounds or communications, speaking clearly, close and far vision, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds, crouching or kneeling, and handling, grasping, and fingering objects. Incumbent occasionally works extended, weekend, and/or evening hours and occasionally travels out of town for workshops, sometimes overnight.
