Reports symptoms and changes in patients' condition and vital signs. Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses, conditions, and physician orders. Reviews, evaluates, and reports diagnostic tests to assess patient's condition. Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals related to assigned patients to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. Prepares patients for, and assists with examinations, procedures, and treatments. Considers patient age and culture during patient treatments and provides any needed information regarding treatment plan. Nurtures a compassionate environment by providing psychological support. Performs appropriate patient tests and safely administers medications within the scope of practice. Administers and maintains accurate records related to medications and treatments as per regulatory bodies, policies, procedures, and physician orders. Communicates plan of care in a timely manner to patient and family, as well as the appropriate team members, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines (ie, HIPAA). Uses best practices for transition of patient care. Uses available resources to assist in discharge planning. Plans, prioritizes, and adjusts assignments to accomplish goals and render superior patient care; seeks assistance when needed. Adapts to changing work demands and environment. Safely operates medical equipment. Serves as a preceptor and assists new staff in the provision of care to help them acclimate to the healthcare environment, and a direct patient care role. Provides concise and constructive feedback when needed. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. CORE QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing Bachelor of Science in nursing required CNOR preferred Certification and Licensing: Registered Nurse License; Basic Life Support Certification (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Experience: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures. In-depth knowledge of health and safety guidelines and procedures (ie, sanitation, decontamination etc.). Excellent patient experience skills. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form Department Specific Functions Meets requirements of OR Nurse Performs all responsibilities and duties required by the Surgery department as specific to the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the surgical patient is addressed. Initiates and modifies the plan of care according to patient needs and assessments/reassessments. Demonstrates knowledge in planning care consistent with assessments and proposed surgical procedure. Ensures the preparation of the OR regarding cleanliness, working condition of equipment and adequacy of supplies. Practices and ensures that cost effective measures are maintained while preparing for surgical procedures. Implements the clinical and technical aspects of perioperative care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedure and appropriate nursing standards as evidenced by care delivery. Responds to changes in surgical procedure in an organized and calm manner. Assists with induction of anesthesia, as necessary. Demonstrates competency in monitoring patients receiving IV conscious sedation. Demonstrates knowledge and safe use of routine equipment. Demonstrates knowledge and safe use of specialty equipment. Monitoring aseptic technique and implements corrective action as necessary in accordance with established policy and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of safe patient positioning according to established policy and procedures. Anticipates needs of surgical team as evidenced by advance knowledge and timely preparation of pertinent instrumentation and/or supplies. Performs and documents initial and all sub- sequent sponge, needle, sharps, and instrument counts according to established policy and procedure. Administers and documents medications and/or narcotics safely and accurately utilizing the five patient rights in accordance with established policy and procedure. Cares for and documents all specimens and cultures in accordance with established policy and procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of and documents administration of blood and blood products according to established policy and procedure. Demonstrates accurate and complete electronic and written perioperative nursing care within established timeframes. Demonstrates continuity of nursing care by coordinating postoperative management with post anesthesia nursing team. Provides inclusive report to relief and/or post anesthesia nursing team based on assessment, reassessment, and patient's response to surgical intervention. Implements assigned activities to maintain established turnover timeframes. Initiates the daily restocking and maintenance of assigned operating room in a timely and efficient manner. Initiates appropriate patient/family education for perioperative/discharge planning needs. Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of plan and interventions and implementation of perioperative care. Reports and documents patient responses or outcomes resulting from nursing and surgical interventions. Evaluates and documents patients progress towards established goals. Revises/updates patient care and individualize plan of care based on patient responses, progress toward goals and/or change in medical/surgical status.
