Innovative-IDM one of the country’s premier Industrial Automation and Motion Controls distributors and we are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team.
The Engineering Manager in our Chicago Branch is a player-coach who leads our engineering, manufacturing and field service teams, while actively participating in engineering and operational tasks. Working in concert with the Branch Manager, our Engineering Manager will direct the personal and professional growth of the teammates within the engineering, manufacturing and field service departments.
Engineering managers are responsible for aligning resources to support new business development in our manufacturing and higher-end technical products, as well as ensuring the timely and quality delivery of our manufactured products.
Responsibilities:
Engineering/Player Role:
Controls Engineer:
- Perform the technical execution of industrial automation projects from start to finish, including design, implementation, testing, and commissioning.
- Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to define project requirements, BOM, scope, and objectives.
- Develop and review mechanical and electrical SOLIDWORKS/CAD drawings.
- Design and develop industrial automation systems, including PLC, HMI, SCADA, DCS systems, AC & DC drive systems and industrial motion control systems.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements.
- Develop programs for industrial automation systems including PLC, HMI, motion, safety, vision, and robotics.
- Create and execute factory acceptance tests for systems you designed and/or programmed.
- Responsible for tracking changes to scope of work and secure change orders when necessary.
- Communicate directly with customers and vendors.
- Write technical specifications along with operation and maintenance manuals, design documents, and test plans, while managing project documentation, including drawings, schematics, manuals, and reports.
- Perform other duties as required.
Quality Control:
- Provide quality guidance to production personnel to ensure quality at the source and assist with training current and new team members on quality standards.
- Perform quality inspection on finished electro-mechanical products assembled by production personnel and will ensure accuracy of build per internal or customer specifications with zero defective product shipping to customers.
- Maintain log of all quality issues received internally or by customers.
- Verify that electrical control panels meet UL508A standards when necessary, and that assembly standards are being met by production assembly personnel.
- Document, markup, and submit Engineering Change Requests to correct drawings, instructions, and bills of materials. Ensure that relevant job documentation is accurate and up to date for quality requirements and work standardization.

Leadership/Management:
- Manage/Lead the engineering, manufacturing and field service departments to meet/exceed financial objectives and customer service expectations.
- Recruit, train and develop, direct reports; manage performance issues as needed. Bring issues and solutions to the attention of the senior leadership team.

- Identify and introduce new ideas and solutions to create efficiency and improve processes.
- Establish and Lead Engineering and Manufacturing meetings for Branch and Senior Leadership.
Project Management:
- Develop, manage, and coordinate project schedules, budgets, and resources as needed to ensure timely delivery of projects for the Engineering and Production queue.
- Monitor project progress including system integration, programming, testing, and commissioning.
- Identify potential risks, and implement corrective actions as required.
- Review and approve engineering designs in coordination with customer and internal stakeholders.
Manufacturing:
- Ensure and prioritize engineering and manufacturing’s staffing, software, equipment needs are met.
- Utilizes technical product, application, and process knowledge to assist teammates and customers.
- Establish, identify, and understand all processes associated with production of assemblies produced by the production floor.
- Works in tandem with Operations team to ensure supplies are available for on-time project completion.
- Updates various systems to ensure job statuses are maintained in real time, and that resources are accurately posted to projects.
Business Development Support:
- Responsible for technical knowledge of products including but not limited to; motion control, robotics, machine controllers, PLC’s and HMI’s, and general automation and controls components.
- Produces, manages and reviews customer quotations, proposals and solutions in a timely manner, based on the customer’s technical and commercial requirements.
- Present solutions to customers, solve customer applications, and provide technical support to our sales team.
- Assist sales and field service teams with discovery and requirements when new opportunities are identified and participate in on-site customer meetings as required.
Field Service:
- Works in tandem with Field Service Manager to direct the daily scheduling and operations of the regional field service team.
- Support field service activities by providing life cycle support of previous solutions.
- Be a technical resource for training and product knowledge for the regional field service team.
- Provide onsite or remote support as needed for Field Service team to timely resolution of customer challenges.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
- Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment a plus.
- Experience in industrial automation industry a plus.
- Minimum of 8 years engineering experience.
- Minimum 3 years of Controls Engineering
- Leadership experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of SOLIDWORKS software or AutoCAD Electrical required.
- Experience with electrical control panels and designs required.
