Job Summary
The Commercial Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the trading desk. This involves maintaining a comprehensive position summary for both the trader and, if applicable, the trading matrix as a whole. The CA is responsible for monitoring the trader’s exposures, which may include consolidating data across the trading matrix. Beyond these core tasks, the CA handles a broader range of activities on the desk. These include managing trade risk and exposure, ensuring consistent and accurate documentation and calculation of exposures, monitoring expiring futures, and advising on hedging strategies in consultation with the trader. Additionally, the CA provides detailed commentary on daily profitability reports, explaining P&L movements. This requires a deep understanding of the P&L and relevant market information pertaining to the trading matrix. The CA also delivers critical management information and decision support to the trader by generating reports and conducting various forms of trading, market, or other analysis on behalf of the trader. In some instances, the CA may also be involved in rolling storage, supporting the setup of new business ventures, and collaborating on internal projects with MIS.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Interact with commercial teams to understand strategies and risk
- Performing the daily reconciliation of complex trading strategies for various commodities: identifying and reconciling differences while adhering to strict daily deadlines
- Analyzing daily PNL estimates to ensure accuracy
- Responding to inquiries from management and trading personnel related to causes of discrepancies between actual PNL and trader estimates
- Managing the complete transaction lifecycle
- Providing guidance to traders, schedulers, confirmations, settlements and product control on correctly modeling transactions in company systems
- Collaborating with other operations personnel to resolve issues that may affect the daily PNL
- Perform special projects as assigned which in many cases will include preparation of ad hoc position and P&L reports and analysis as required by the commercial team
- Validating trader marks against third party sources such as ICE, CME, OPIS, Platts, & Argus
- Build, maintain and refine controls
- Contribute to the development of the Risk team and to the positive working environment
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the functions noted above within Energy Commodities; must demonstrate an understanding of the Energy Markets and Risk Management
- Commodity (Energy preferred) market experience, especially knowledge of Refined Products & Bulk Commodities.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field of study
- Understanding of Options and Storage Valuation.
- Strong technical skills in Excel, VBA, and Python are preferred.
