Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense (DoD) and other U.S. Government agencies, turning research into impactful products with military and commercial applications. Our power & energy systems portfolio supports the DoD’s electrification of platforms, such as Navy ships. About the Role
The Modeling and Simulation Engineering role requires passion and drive to understand intricate multi-domain/multiphysics systems, identify important features and dynamic phenomena, and create appropriate computer models of these systems which incorporate the relevant features, dynamics, and application-critical behaviors. The modeling and simulation engineer will work both individually and in concert with other engineers, subject-matter experts, and program management to devise suitable modeling strategies (including physics-based and behavioral approaches) and subsequently to produce robust, reliable models for several customers across government and industry.
The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge. The candidate must be organized and detail oriented. This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial.
Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide multi-domain/multiphysics physical virtual modeling subject matter expertise for the Company’s projects related to electrical engineering and modeling and simulation, particularly in the development and application of digital twins for Electrical Power and Energy Systems components and systems including electric machinery, gas turbines, diesel generators, propulsion systems, batteries, power electronics, switchgear, etc.
- Write software and manipulate data streams from the sensors of physical systems to update physics-based or data-driven models to reflect the status of the physical system.
- Apply and learn as needed multiple algorithm and software development languages (e.g., Python, Java, R, C, C++ …), libraries (e.g., OpenCV, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras …) and platforms (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, …) as necessary to collaborate with the Company’s software development and modeling & simulation teams.
- Collaborate closely with other Company scientists and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams to prototype and test new technologies in both the power & energy systems and unmanned systems portfolios.
- Accurately forecast time and level of effort to achieve a desired result. Support the project Principal Investigator(s) to identify goals and your role within the tasking to achieve the goals. Support the Program Manager(s) to meet project schedules and deliver on-time.
- Contribute to monthly reports and quarterly performance reviews for the customer. Contributions to include text, presentation slides, and oral updates.
- Contribute to the business development and hardware engineering teams to support a product development roadmap that leads to sales of products and/or licensing of intellectual property derived from the Company’s science and technology research.
- Travel as required to execute research and product development. Travel is estimated to average less than 10%.
- Other duties as assigned, potentially supporting the Company as needed to develop new funded research and engineering projects.
Core Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline.
- Demonstrated mastery of at least one computer modeling & simulation environment (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise in Electrical Power and Energy Systems including electric machinery, gas turbines, diesel generators, propulsion systems, batteries, power electronics, switchgear, etc.
- U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline. A record of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree.
- Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods. Awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following technical areas:
- Cooling and ventilation systems including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping, expansion tanks, fans, etc.
- Fuel delivery systems for marine applications
- Machinery control systems including sensing, communication, and system level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems
