Job Description:
As a member of the Executive Chamber, the Senior Policy Advisor serves under the direction of the Deputy Secretary for Economic Development and Workforce and the Assistant Secretary for Labor and Workforce, advising and helping oversee all phases of government operations and policy management within the labor and workforce portfolio. The labor and workforce portfolio includes, but is not limited to, the New York State Department of Labor, Workers’ Compensation Board, Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, Industrial Board of Appeals, and the Office of Strategic Workforce Development within the New York State Urban Development Corporation (dba Empire State Development).
The Senior Policy Advisor will report to the Assistant Secretary for Labor and Workforce and will work in close coordination with one or more other policy advisors on the immediate team, along with senior agency staff across New York State government.
Duties:
- Aids the Deputy Secretary and Assistant Secretary in all aspects of portfolio management, including but not limited to, preparing status briefs, facilitating portfolio meetings, overseeing major priority projects, coordinating new initiatives, structuring policy and strategy conversations, communicating policy proposals, and advancing the Governor’s policy goals
- Reviews correspondence Interacts with senior agency and authority staff to oversee and ensure proper functioning of agency businesses

- Consults with non-governmental agencies and organizations within program areas
- Drafts, coordinates, and provides informed opinion and advice on policies, programs, and initiatives
- Serves as liaison with the Division of Budget on the policy implications of fiscal decisions in assigned areas
- Travels between NYC, Albany and throughout NYS as needed
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree and at least five years of years of relevant work experience with a focus on public administration, public policy, labor law and policy, workforce development, or related topics.
A relevant master’s degree or JD may substitute for one year of experience.
