Senior Mechanical Engineer – Consultant
An innovative leader in the field of solid-state cooling and heating technology is seeking a short-term W2 consultant to aid the design of mechanical components, assemblies, products, and solutions during a critical period of increased demand. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the part/assembly, including preliminary design and proof of concept, final design, tooling, qualification, and production launch of assigned systems and components.
This is a 2-3 month W2 contract opportunity in Durham, NC. Target W2 pay range is $58 - $73/hr. with flexibility for the ideal senior level candidate. Candidates local to the Raleigh/Durham metro area are strongly preferred, as some time in-office will be needed to work hands-on with devices and prototypes. While this position is designed with a standard M-F 8-5 schedule in mind, part time arrangements may be available as well. No subcontracting or visa arrangements are available.
Responsibilities of the Senior Mechanical Engineer:
- Drive the design of new and redesigned components to improve quality, function, performance, and reliability while maintaining cost, manufacturability, and agency compliance.
- Create and review mechanical design specifications and drawings.
- Conduct mechanical, thermal, and airflow analysis/simulation of designs to evaluate performance and feasibility.
- Develop and test prototypes using various tools and methods.
- Assist in the writing of technical requirements specifications for systems and sub-systems.
- Create assembly and process documentation including BOMs.
- Assist in the development of test and quality plans for designed systems and components, ensuring system performance meets the requirements of the manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Engage and collaborate with manufacturing teams on design and production-related matters.
Qualifications of the Senior Mechanical Engineer:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks.
- Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) tools; Arena preferred.
- Familiarity with thermal and airflow modeling applications such as Ansys Icepak or Autodesk CFD.
- Hands-on experience in the design, testing, and manufacturing of industrial and/or consumer products and systems, including electrical/electronic integration and thermal management.
- Experience in the design of metal parts manufactured by extrusion, stamping, laser cutting, forming/bending, and die-casting.
- Experience in the design of plastic parts and plastic material selection for injection molding, thermoforming, or other production manufacturing methods.
- Experience in procurement of parts using rapid prototyping methods.
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical design, safety, and regulatory compliance standards.
