Job Summary:
The Business Intelligence Analyst, Population Health position reports directly to the Manager, Population Health Analytics. Key responsibilities of the role include:
Providing and presenting data analytics, visualizations and actionable insights to WellStar and WellStar Clinical Partners.
Creating complex interactive visualizations, reports and dashboards to support business decisions using a range of technology tools.
Collaborating with IT, EI and other organizational partners to ensure proper governance of the data and appropriate data structures for reporting are in place.
Representing the Population Health Analytics team within the organization and lead efforts to support data needs from operations, strategy and senior leadership.

Provide data and tools for leaders to drive performance resulting in improved health outcomes for our patients, decreased utilization of unnecessary and high-cost healthcare services and higher shared savings in value based care contracts.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Analytics and Visualization Development
- Work directly with the customer to understand the business requirements for information needs.
- Select of the most appropriate visualization tool and delivery mechanism for requests. This includes selection of the best graphical or numerical representation of the information and the appropriate level of interactivity and drill down.
- Design, develop, document, and distribute the selected visualization while working with the customer within the guidelines of the WellStar data management framework.
- Serve as a mentor and resource to BI Specialist and provide audits and feedback on their development work.
- Develop appropriate level of insight to and understanding of the information being analyzed and apply credible qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis considering the type of data being measured insuring statistical validity wherever possible.
- Deliver end user training to the customer on the use of the tools and method of interpretation of the visualization.
- Regularly formulate and present operational and strategic recommendations as a result of data aggregation and analysis.
- Analyze new patients/patient populations that are of financial risk to identify underlying trends, disease prevalence, and utilization/spend drivers. Collaborate with customers, technical departments and other analysts on data structure needs, governance and meaning
- Act as a liaison with the customer to communicate data structure or metric needs for appropriate data model build to the EI staging team members and counterparts in IT responsible for data warehouse and data model build.
- Develop a working knowledge of the lineage, metadata and overall meaning of data being analyzed and document appropriately per WellStar guidelines.
- Identify and source where possible, data quality issues impacting analyses and bring issues to EI leaderships and other appropriate individuals attention.
- Apply appropriate statistical and mathematical principles to all analyses.
- Have a working understanding of benchmarking and comparative analysis techniques and interpretation.
- Develop an excellent understanding of data transformed, managed, and reported specifically by the Population Health Analytics team (e.g. claims-based utilization, cost and quality results, operational benchmarking, quality benchmarking, patient satisfaction, etc.) Organizational expert technologically regarding data analytics and visualization
- Maintain an understanding of relational databases in concept and how to practically work with the data housed therein.
- Maintain an understanding of a variety of technology tools used by WellStar to present information (e.g. SQL, SSRS, Advanced MS Excel, MS SharePoint, SAS, and other tools)
- Serve as a training and informational resource for BI Specialists and others within the organization.
- Continually look to maintain, grow, and develop knowledge and skills in applicable tools.
- Develop an understanding of current visualization best practice and trends Other Duties
- Understand process improvement techniques utilized at WellStar and practice them with your own work processes. Participate with Population Health Analytics team on process improvement efforts to improve productivity and quality of output.
- Participate in departmental and cross-functional teams representing Population Health as needed.
- Work independently and multi-task effectively on multiple assignments as needed.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with all levels of leadership and staff within the organization while representing the Population Health department.
Required Minimum Education:
BS/BA in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics Required or
similar technical degree, BS/BA in another field with significant work experience in data analytics and visualization Required or
equivalent experience Required and
Clinical educational background Preferred and
Masters degree Preferred
