General Summary:
The Paralegal works with General Counsel & Executive Management as well as independently to administer and maintain the corporate records pertaining to legal files, real estate files, permits, contracts and insurance claims. This position will provide administrative and litigation support for the General Counsel. The Paralegal has to have extensive contract knowledge, familiarity with real estate and litigation and have excellent organization skills. This position is responsible for a wide variety of legal and administrative functions for the Corporation. Absolute confidentiality, good judgment, organization skills, and strong attention to detail are required in all duties and any other tasks as assigned. Prior work experience in a closely held, private organization would be beneficial.
The normal work hours are 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Special projects may require additional hours as needed. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or Manager Safety and Health
- Monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of all team members and proactively addresses deficits
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22
- Maintains designated records for shareholders and related entities
- Administrative and Litigation support for General Counsel
- Reviews all leases, contracts, agreements, Non-Disclosure Agreements, including those pertaining to equipment, property, royalties, and related business needs, and any other legal documents as deemed necessary
- Reviews purchase orders for the Sales Group to ensure that the terms and conditions are acceptable and properly executed by all applicable parties
- Responsible for all of the Corporations real property files
- Support the Credit department with liens and bonding administration
- Processes all insurance claims, either in-house or via insurance company, including Workers’ Compensation, General and Automobile
- Under supervision, works closely with outside counsel to settle workers’ compensation claims as well as maintaining documents and reports on tracking progress of cases to report to management
- Maintains the corporate index system (including corporate vault) to keep track of all corporate records
- Assists in maintaining company-wide document retention system
- Maintains designated corporate records for the Corporation and all affiliates
- Processes all legal invoices for Corporation
- Prepares documents for zoning and permit hearings and maintains files of original documents
- Maintains calendar for renewal of permits in coordination with manager Environmental Compliance as well as filing and following up renewals
- Maintains five-year calendar of permit due dates and expirations
- Maintains releases required for use of company properties as required. Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
- Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals
- Notarizes documents as necessary
- Maintains regular attendance and adheres to all company policies and procedures
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to identify certain resolutions and documents that can be prepared in house or require the direction and supervision of outside counsel
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
- Capability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
- Aptitude to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
- Capability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Proficient MS Office Suite skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
- Proficient skills with basic accounting software such as QuickBooks and Quicken.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Maturity in dealing with high level, confidential matters both inside and outside of the organization
- Demonstrated experience with both personal and corporate income tax preparation
- Proven ability to think creatively, pro-actively solve problems, and apply analytical skills
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) or (B.S.) from four-year college or university; Minimum of five (5) years related experience and/or training
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Current North Carolina Driver’s License required
- Paralegal certification strongly preferred
- Notary Public required
