The Automation Manager is a critical role dedicated to leading the introduction of advanced automated solutions within manufacturing facilities. This role involves working closely with cross-functional team members, including engineers, safety experts, and external integrators, to develop and deploy automation systems that enhance productivity, reduce manual processes, and drive Manufacturing 4.0 initiatives. The Automation Manager will lead the technical aspects of automation projects, ensuring that new technologies are swiftly and seamlessly integrated into the operations with a focus on minimal disruption and maximum impact.
What You’ll Do
- Automation Strategy and Implementation:
- Define the automation strategy, focusing on transforming manual processes into advanced automated solutions.
- Develop detailed automation project plans, including scope, design, testing, and implementation phases.
- Ensure automation systems are aligned with operational goals, quality standards, and safety regulations.
- Process Analysis and Solution Design:
- Collaborate with the Process Engineering Manager to analyze existing processes, identify key inputs and outputs, and assess current capabilities.
- Translate process requirements into advanced automation solutions, working closely with external integrators and internal stakeholders.
- Lead the design, configuration, and testing of automated systems, including PLCs, robotics, and HMI/SCADA technologies.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner with other team members, including process engineers, safety experts, maintenance personnel, and quality teams, to ensure cohesive project execution.
- Act as a technical expert and resource, providing guidance on automation best practices and emerging technologies.
- Foster a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and innovative problem-solving within the team.
- Integration and Deployment:
- Oversee the installation, commissioning, and integration of automated systems, ensuring minimal disruption to existing operations.
- Manage the transition from manual to automated processes, working with the production team to ensure smooth adoption and ramp-up.
- Lead troubleshooting and optimization efforts during and after deployment to ensure systems operate at peak performance.
- Vendor and Stakeholder Management:
- Collaborate with external integrators, automation suppliers, and technology partners to design and deploy customized automation solutions.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring accountability and alignment with the overall project goals.
- Regularly update senior management and other key stakeholders on project status, risks, and outcomes.
- Continuous Improvement and Innovation:
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on enhancing the performance, reliability, and scalability of automated systems.
- Implement best practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process controls for all automated equipment.
- Explore new automation technologies and strategies that can further advance the company’s manufacturing capabilities.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and mentor automation engineers within the Tiger Team, providing technical direction and professional development opportunities.
- Set clear objectives, monitor performance, and conduct evaluations to drive team success.
- Promote a results-oriented culture focused on innovation, efficiency, and achieving project milestones.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure all automated systems comply with relevant safety standards, regulations, and environmental guidelines.
- Conduct safety assessments and implement corrective actions to mitigate risks associated with new technologies.
- Promote a safety-first approach in all automation projects, ensuring that systems are designed with operator safety in mind.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of automation projects, including design specifications, test protocols, and performance metrics.
- Prepare and present reports on project outcomes, key learnings, and recommendations for future improvements to senior management.
Who You Are
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Expertise in automation technologies, including PLC programming, robotics, HMI/SCADA, and Manufacturing 4.0 tools.
- Excellent project management abilities, including planning, execution, and resource coordination.
- Strong analytical skills, with a focus on process optimization and performance improvement.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
Skills/Experience We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field).
- 5+ years of automation engineering experience, with a focus on leading complex automation projects in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience in managing cross-functional teams and working with external integrators to deploy advanced automation solutions.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, which may involve exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
Work Environment:
- Combination of office setting and time spent on the production floor.
