Position Summary Description
As the Senior HVDC Engineer, you will use work experience, knowledge and industry accepted practices to approach a broad variety of assignments and related fields on the high voltage DC (HVDC) system. Additional training on the HVDC system will be provided as part of the qualification program. You will plan and complete work requiring engineering judgment in selection and substantial adaptation/modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
In this position you will work independently to perform most assignments but will coordinate work with operations’ staff to facilitate project completion and assist in training of system operators. This position will develop, manage, and provide evidence for the NERC compliance program.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering. Alternative degrees in combination with specialized experience and/or certifications may be considered.
- 5+ years of experience working at a substation, power plant, or HVDC facility
- A graduate degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Management is considered a plus
- Experience with Hitachi Energy’s MACH control and protection system is considered a major plus
Technical Competencies/Skills:
-Demonstrated experience with:
- Operations and maintenance of an HVDC converter station/transmission project
- Managing a diverse, cross-functional team in a challenging technical environment
- Auditing procedures and risk management
- Developing, implementing, and maintaining processes, procedures, and evidence
- Technical Report writing
-Strong knowledge of:
- HVDC systems and equipment (specific knowledge of Hitachi Energy MACH controls is a plus)
- Familiarity with Power Electronics, HVDC systems, Protection and Control, SCADA, and associated equipment (FACTS knowledge is also considered a plus)
- NERC Standards and the programs/evidence needed to ensure compliance with applicable requirements
- Applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE

Essential Functions
- Assist the HVDC O&M Manager to lead a team of operator/technicians and to achieve the maximum possible availability of the HVDC project for commercial operations
- Troubleshooting of faults and trips at the converter station
- Provide technical training and training opportunities to the O&M staff
- Provide technical expertise and input to support wholistic project schedule, stake holder updates, and efforts related to project regulatory, public, or government affairs
- Work with the NERC Compliance Manager to develop, document, and comply with all applicable NERC standards requirements
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Physical Requirements
Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE). Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle report. Must be able to lift 50 pounds if needed.
Working Conditions
Some travel and work outside of normal business hours. While working in certain areas of the plant there is the potential for exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment.
