Position Overview

Responsibilities include being both a technical and functional product owner for PowerPlan’s Tax portfolio of products, infusing advanced knowledge of industry requirements and leading platform technologies into our solution. You will collaborate with Development and Product teams and playing a critical role in performing customer discovery to gather requirements and present recommendations for solutions that are vital for the future of PowerPlan Tax.
We are looking for a roll-up-the-sleeves Senior Product Owner with a business mindset and development driven background to command this highly complex product suite. This is a highly collaborative role that must be able to earn the trust of customers, peers and internal stakeholders. Our group is leading the way to make this vision possible by making our products more robust, but also simpler, faster, and more intuitive, while also identifying opportunities to develop new valuable innovations for our customers. This is a strategic company initiative and this role will have visibility and interaction with the most senior leaders at PowerPlan.
Key Performance Objectives
1. Own the PowerPlan Tax product suite of solutions: Be a market voice by having a working knowledge of all aspects of our platform, both technically and functionally, work to continually improve it, and actively engage in its success and the solutions it serves. Work closely with the product management leadership team to set and drive the strategy and vision for designated solutions. Clearly communicate and champion the vision of the PowerPlan solution to customers and other stakeholders. Develop and continuously update the roadmap for the suite of products and a prioritized backlog for development. Leverage and develop leadership, product, sales, and marketing skills to help put together a complete business plan that enables product success.
2. Develop and Communicate the Roadmap: Work closely with the rest of the product management and development teams to bring value-added solution enhancements, technical considerations, and key assumptions or risks to drive a live up-to-date roadmap and prioritized backlog that is highly visible to the team. Having a technical and functional background is a must to ensure the entire roadmap is aligned with the business.
3. Effectively Collaborate with a Team: This role requires daily interaction, frequent communication, and iteration with on-site, remote, and off-shore team members to disseminate our platform capabilities to the individual solution and development teams served.
4. Active Engagement & Leadership: The work environment contains fluidity and a need for agility to shift based on updated priorities with a positive attitude and open communication. Identifying and communicating risks or roadmap changes early and often is essential to delivering effective updates and presenting solution-viable options to key stakeholders.
5. Earn the Trust of Customers and Experts: To be successful, you will need to understand the software functionality to a high degree and understand the needs of the market and the business value for our customers that it produces. Show a high aptitude for understanding complex problems, collaborating and conversing with industry experts, and distilling the noise around varying market problems into discrete actionable solutions. Take an active and leading role in customer discovery around new enhancements and solutions to drive requirements and develop products our customers will love.
6. Coordinate new product initiatives and track progress of overall releases: Work closely with multi-regional development teams to manage scrum ceremonies including grooming, sprint planning, and retrospectives. Define and prioritize the epics required to obtain project milestones based on high-level customer requirements for new products. This includes planning which epics Development works on during each sprint and coordination of backlog grooming.
7. Drive High Level Requirements and Feature Sets: Active listening is critical to understanding market problems. Be able to translate these market problems into well-defined epics and features sets that will enable our product and development teams to succeed. This is a critical step in the ownership of driving new products or enhancements from ideation to launch. Produce development ready business requirements in support of each epic and coordinate with Technical Architects to validate business requirements from a technical standpoint. Work closely with Development, QA and Documentation teams to ensure feature requirements are properly met, tested and documented, jumping in when needed to help complete testing and documentation of features.
8. Obtain successful milestones: Ensure each milestone is met by continually improving product management’s design and requirements gathering process.
9. Drive education and enablement throughout PowerPlan: Work closely with internal stakeholders to communicate roadmaps and backlog items. Work with stakeholders to create and provide appropriate enablement and training to pre-sales, professional services, training, support and marketing so they can successfully perform their functions for new features and products.
10. Continuous Learning: Our customers come first and to best serve them we need to fully understand and be attuned to the problems they face. Utilize knowledge of current capabilities and stay current on new trends in the market to serve the needs of our customers using the solutions.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
An ideal candidate has:
3-7 years of experience as a PO, with Agile SCRUM experience
Proven success building both on-premise and SaaS software for B2B
Experience conducting customer research and business analysis to strengthen requirements and story writing
Strong organizational and problem solving/analytical skills
Experience working in JIRA, Confluence, Azure
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
Bonus if they have:
- Utility and Energy industry experience
- Experience working with B2B software products focused on tax and/or fixed assets
